Ask RiotACT

Hi Rioters.

My tenants can’t use their mobile phone for call/text and 4G when they are indoor in my place in Bruce if they are with Optus and Vodafone.

Apart from switching to Telstra, any tips on what the tenants could do to improve reception?

Thanks.

Changing to either Optus or Vodafone is not the worst thing they could do. I am with Telstra and sometimes can’t get service in my own home in Macgregor. I also lose all phone and internet services when wandering around Westfield Belconnen. I have complained to Telstra but they have done nothing to fix the issue, stating it is the interference of the building structure at the mall and not their problem. So why do Voda and Optus work just fine in the same spots I wonder? Welcome to the 21st Century.

Different carriers use different base stations mostly in different locations so of course there will be variations in coverage.

In shopping centres they use micro cells which have no hope in hell of 100% coverage and nor do they attempt to do so either as it would be impractical to do so.

As to the OP’s question Optus used to and still may have an option where they can install a micro cell in a house though I assume as the tenants seems to want to use data they don’t have a broadband connection that the microcell would require.

So really not much can be done and nor is it really your problem as landlord anyway.
