Ask RiotACT: Where can I play my sax?

Ask RiotACT

I retired and learning the saxophone was on my bucket list. With no musical background or any experience with reading music I purchased an Alto Saxopohone and started taking lessons. Two years later and the addition of a Tenor sax I have reached the point where I would like to experience playing music with other musicians.

Not at the level where joining in jam sessions around Canberra would be an option I sought out other possibilities of joining a group of blokes my age to jam with. Unfortunately, the Mens’ Sheds and the like don’t appear to offer that opportunity.

Does anyone know if such a musical group exists in Canberra?

If not…. is there anyone out there that would like to have access to and/or form such a group?

I have no set ideas on practice venues or the ideal structure of such a group but I envisage it being open-ended, inclusive and with the emphasis on fun. I’m open to suggestions regarding musical style with a leaning towards jazz standards and the like.

Feel free to contact me at mundymick1@hotmail.com.
