Ask RiotACT: where to fill LPG camping gas bottles?

Ask RiotACT

Hello Rioters, maybe someone can help me with this one.

I use small Primus LPG gas cylinders for camping and my usual filling place, Southern Innovation in Mitchell, advised me this week they will be closing their filling facility due to safety concerns over the proximity of a new parking area next door to them. Due to tightened restrictions over the last few years many filling places such as service stations and camping shops have been removed. The only other place I know of that still fills bottles is Auto Basics at Fyshwick. They also do cylinder pressure testing.

I am not interested in the ‘Swap and Go’ cylinders at service stations (they are to big) so do any Rioters know of other places in the ACT or Queanbeyan that still fill LPG bottles.

Both Anaconda stores (Fyshwick and Gungahlin do refills.
Many people go to Swap and Go when their bottles are getting low but are not yet empty. The last bit of gas in a bottle is of poorer quality and because it is not emptied amount of this poor quality gas builds up in the bottle so Swap and Go gas tends to not burn as hot. When it burn it also gives off soot and a bad smell, not good if using a Weber style BBQ.

No one has mentioned Metro Serice Station at 15 Barrier Street Fyshwick as listed in http://www.gasbottlerefills.com In October they were easily the cheapest in Canberra for REFILLS. Bunnings are cheaper but they don’t do refills. We would appreciate knowing the Metro price for a 4.5kg refill. They are always too busy to answer the phone

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Going to 4Kg ones is not practical for the type of camping we do however. I’ll check out your website Gordon,

I run a website specifically for people like you Neal. They are people with gas bottles they just do not want to swap. Now, I agree that in the ACT, it is near impossible to find a refill site. However, there are a couple, but they know they have a stranglehold on the refill market and they are a bit pricey.

I am an 80 year old grey nomad who travels Australia in a motorhome and all I want is to help people save money on their BBQ and camping gas.

My website address is gasbottlerefills.com

Be sure to look at the menu item “Great Gas Tips” also.

I gave up on trying to fill mine. Alot of places used to do it (servos/BCF/etc) but now seems there’s only one or two, probably due to over-protective nanny state rules as usual. It was definitely more convenient carrying around a 2kg Primus bottle, but a 4kg with a Primus adapter is much more convenient in terms of swapping, abeit a bit larger/heavier.

Burning Log did refill gas bottles 6 months ago when I went in trying to fill my Primus bottle, but they told me they “didn’t have the adapter” in order to fill it. I asked if they sold the adapters and they said yes – I guess it was just all too hard and not enough profit for them to bother. Ended up giving the Primus bottle away on Gumtree, bought an adapter and a 4kg swap bottle and convenience factor has gone up many fold.

yep. 4kg swap and go is the way to go – I just don’t have time to traipse around trying to get bottles filled.

If you’re up for the drive The Gundaroo Gas Guy does them last time I checked. https://gundaroo.cylex.com.au/company/kleenheat-gas-lpg-gundaroo-gas-guy-19196260.html
Not sure if they are too big for you but Bunnings swap 4.5kg bottles which is what I have ended up using.

Try BCF in Fyshwick. I think they do gas filling.

Doh. Just reread the OP and you already knew that. Sorry about that. The other suggestion is Burning Log at Fyshwick but I can’t confirm if they do it.

After posting this I did a search on RiotACT (which I probably should have done first) and found this topic was discussed 3 years ago.
A possibility I will check is BarBQs galore at Fyshwick but they may have also stopped filling.
Looks like Queanbeyan may be the go as they may not have introduced the stricter filling regulations.
If anyone has other ideas I would be interested to still hear though.
