Ask RiotACT: Why does the ACT start school a week late?

Hi Rioters.

Noticed this week that NSW and VIC are both back at school already, but the ACT isn’t.

Someone at work told me it was the same when his (now grown kids) were at school as well – great time for less crowded holidays to popular spots he reckoned.

Can anyone explain why the ACT starts a week later than other states, but still finishes at the same time?

It is also to do with people taking vacation, if everyone goes on holiday all at once then all the places will fill up, spread them out and get more people coming

Phil White read Shelby Canterford's post. If your idea was correct why do businesses close down at Christmas and not stagger their staff holidays?

NSW has pupil free days at the start of the terms, ACT has them in one block at the start of the year. My ACT high school student has been ribbibg my NSW primary school student about it. But she'll get her own back at the start of term 2.

The dates of school terms and holidays in Australia are determined by the respective education departments of each state and territory, not the Federal Government. One more thing the Federal Government can blame the states for.........

We finish later. And they’ve only started a couple of days sooner really, not even a full week.

And we have standard 10 week terms whereas other states might have 9 or 10 or 11 week terms. We always finish closer to Xmas as well in the case of public schools.

Jesse Mahoney nsw finished dec 19. Nsw and Qld schools have student free days I think at the start of the terms whereas the ACT doesn’t. We have done that this week and we don’t have any more during the yr. This could be one of the reasons. The Nsw and Act terms are similar apart from this week this yr

It happens every year

We finished 1-2 weeks later than most states last year.

The ACT has four ten week terms.

Other states jiggle them around so the holidays align with public holidays
