Asking for a bailout? Who us?

The ABC has a story on claims the ACT is looking for some sort of Commonwealth assistance.

The ACT Government says reports that it has asked the Commonwealth for a bailout package for the territory’s economy are untrue.

Plans by the Commonwealth government to slash spending and cut public service jobs has the ACT Government worried.

But the Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has denied suggestions they have asked the Federal Government to bail them out.

Throwing oneself on the mercy of the current Government would not be a clever strategy.

What was the old Paul Keating line? Never stand between a bucket of money and a State Treasurer?

Of course we’d like some free money.

I personally want lots of things I’m not going to get.

What is it with Liberal governments and their trashing of conservative ideology regarding welfare? We all remember Peter Costello introducing the Baby Bonus and other middle class welfare to try and shore up the votes of the Howard Battlers in the western suburbs. Whenever the Rudd and Gillard governments tried to means test or cut back the Baby Bonus the Libs yelled that it was “an attack on the family”. Now we have the Abbott government providing a $100million assistance package just because a few thousand people have lost their jobs in Vic & SA.

Conservative governments are supposed to be anti-welfare yet whenever they get in they create new forms of welfare for people who are already well-off and who are not deserving of it.

I don’t care if they bring in pay parking, but the money should go to ACT govt, to be spent on Canberra infrastructure.

I can’t understand why there isn’t more fuss about this.

Why do they get to bring in a fee, then send all the money straight out of Canberra.

Katy and Barr are clearly deranged.

Australians might care about Holden workers, but parasites in Canberra? Don’t think so.

James Holden was one of those dreaded boat people and a pommy bastard. Peace on earth.

For a good start they could give us the pay parking money they are going to get from the parlimentary triangle – this will be be a lot of our money being sucked out of Canberra every day.

Perhaps instead we should just be grateful that we got to park there free for so long.

I had someone say to me recently that SA & Vic are set to lose a small number of jobs from large jurisdictions in 3 years time, whereas under Labor’s cuts to the PS which the Coalition is going to keep and possibly expand upon the ACT is set to lose more jobs in total from a small jurisdiction over the next few years (14500 PS jobs to go based on Labor’s settings according to the CT, with 40% of the PS in Canberra that’s ballpark 5800 for Canberra). The person said, where is the Federal assistance to the ACT to help develop new industries that will create replacement jobs?

As a Liberal backbencher, Zed theoretically has the option to cross the floor. Does anyone think he’d do it in an attempt to get a better deal for Canberra?

After the MYEFO Grand Guignol, and the suggestion that jobs could be moved from Canberra to help areas affected by the loss of motor industry jobs (!?) a bailout for Canberra seems a little unlikely, but I suppose there’s always the possibility that the second ACT Senate seat might be regarded more nervously, particularly if a re-run WA Senate poll goes less than well for the Coalition and friends.
