The ABC has a strange story of Dickson College celebrating what could have been a tragic failure:

A rare collection of Aboriginal art has been unearthed in a cupboard at a college in Canberra.

The National Gallery and the National Museum have confirmed the paintings are part of an Arnhem Land collection; some are by well-known Indigenous artists.

Dickson College principal Beth Mitchell says the paintings are a legacy of the school’s Aboriginal studies classes.

Such a pity they weren’t taking better care of the legacy.

“Such a pity they weren’t taking better care of the legacy.”

Don’t forget that when these artworks were bought aboriginal art wasn’t seen to be important by the Australian public and the Australian art world.

The important thing is that they have been preserved, even if it was in a dark cupboard (away from damaging sunlight), and that they have been found again.

This website seems to be full to the brim of skeptics and old cranks. The paintings were found in a cupboard, not a waste-bin: can’t you cranky people just find happiness in the fact that the paintings were recovered???

Yeah, because Aboriginal art has changed so much in 30 years, it must contain some pretty rare work?

I’m thinking the telephone was closer than the industrial bin.

retired Air cadet RAAF, if you are after a rise then pop a viagra. Its sad that this has happened but at the same time it is a bonus as it has created renewed interest in these pieces.

Yeah, cause when you aren’t trolling about hating black fellas, killing cats, hating poor people, blaming rape on the victims, your something of the art enthusiast. get back in your box.
