At least the nutter chose a good photo of me

So let’s be very clear. The stickers going up around town are nothing to do with RiotACT, although I am glad they used a nice photo.

Any defamatory or illegal comments which we have deleted and they publish are entirely their responsibility and we do look forward to seeing the legal fraternity getting medieval on the arses. (yes we’re looking at getting the hole closed)

I didn’t ask for my facebook photo to be stuck up all over town. But I’d rather be the person having their photo plastered than the nutbag doing the plastering.

If you’re wondering why some comments get modded and some don’t then our guidance from 2009 remains as sound now as then.

Mostly we’re deleting spam, and duplicate comments. There is the occasional regrettable rant by someone who’d become unfortunately over-involved in a discussion and then there’s petty squabbling no sane person would care to read so we don’t care to allow derail conversation.

Every now and then someone wants to bring personal abuse to an author rather than discuss what’s been said and that’s probably what these arsehats are trying to get to.

But mostly it’s spam, duplicates, the ravings of nutters, defamation, breaches of child protection laws and the grumblings of arseholes. If this person has got nothing better to do with their life than bring these onto the internet then I truly pity them.

Peter Brent’s recent musings on moderation largely sum up my feelings.

But more importantly I’d rather spend my time finding interesting things to share with the RiotACT readership the arguing minutiae with obsessives.

But I thank them for using a decent photo.

[This is not an invitation for every aggrieved poster to complain their comment didn’t make the grade. It turns out there’s another website for that.]

Who should be (but isn’t) taking action against RAUnMod here?

The agreement users agree to when joining RiotACT does not displace the individual user’s automatic IP rights over their content, so technically we all retain ownership of our content.

However a licence is granted to RiotACT to use the content, including in hard copy, and including for commercial purposes, for ever, anywhere.

Now for artists submitting their work to RiotACT, take note. This provision does not specify comments alone, it includes all content from the user.

So this is what my recently VR-ed colleagues are up to

I wonder if it’s the revenge of Mr Gillespie and his plastic bag collection?

To be entirely honest, I like the Defamatory/Insightful Moderation Loophole that the current version of WordPress allows.
But mostly because the WordPress Cookie Problem is a total Pain in the Anus.

I’d probably find it flattering that out there somewhere is someone that is losing sleep over me, stewing and stewing and motivated enough to go through unmodded posts then ups it by posting stickers around just to make sure people go to the site in order to share his/her outrage (over what, i’m not sure).

Someone really needs a hobby. Probably one that doesn’t involve constructing a little shrine with candles and loads of fuzzy photos taken with a long range lens.

Wow. This has got to be the 2nd best thing to happen to RiotACT!

I had so many “fark I must must have been p*ssed when I wrote that” moments.

I love the way that the shadow site has some of the moderated comments in bright orange or red when they are either critical of the RiotAct, or in some way unusual. It’s as if a kindergarten child found a bin of newspaper clippings and is using his textas on them to make his own special poster.

Third post nut job (at least).

And Thumper, arches nemisis sounds like something you might get from wearing high heels all the time…Not that I’m saying you do, necessarily.

I had a quick read over it, I was surprised to see that there was not many/if any posts moderated by “One” I thought he’d have some pearlers in there.

Yup.

Upset enough people and you could get the whole “Dr Who” effect going on…..

well, it *is* my facebook photo.

So your name really is Overheard?
Some moons ago I knew of a fellow in the ADF whose name was Overend. To this day I sincerely hope that his nick name was “Arse”…
Arse Overend.

BTW, that photo kinda makes you look like Jack Black!

Wish *I* looked like Jack Black….

There are some strange, possibly unhinged people out there.

Even for arch-nemesises, or is that arch-nemisi?

Possibly arches nemisis? 🙂

There can only be one!

I’m enjoying looking over some of the comments on there, I must admit. Especially the one where nice_enough calls JB’s use of the term ‘Death Smash’ disrespectful and then, in the very same sentence, accuses him of being autistic.

I love RA, the stuff that’s not interesting or informative is at least usually kinda funny, in the same way as watching a train full of clowns derail off a cliff would be.

I respect the work you do around here JB, for all the head-banging cringe-worthy cretins on here, RiotAct is an asset to the local community.

Rebooting gets a whole new meaning?

Theft of intellectual property?

it’s a bit of a grey area as IP.

I’ll cop that, JB I believe, although I could be wrong, that your arch-nemesis is none other than Wa###ck Ly##h!

To see comments that were meant for here turning up elsewhere, out of their intended context is a little unsettling, even if the comments are harmless drivel. I agree with Baldy. Why someone would do this is the most perplexing question. Why don’t they set up their own site and hopefully generate original discussion, rather than taking random bits of content from elsewhere? I really don’t understand.

Three post nutbag time.

I just read Peter Brent’s post about moderating his blog, and I wholeheartedly agree with him.

As far as I’m concerned, JB and the other RA team can delete whatever the hell they like from this site, because they run the show. They don’t have to follow APS fairness rules, or allow for equity of outcomes in all cases. They have to keep the place attractive to the contributors and the advertisers so that they can have fun and stay in business, and that’s it. If the moderation policy drives away the punters then it will cause them problems, but it seems to have been working so far.

If people want to put stuff on the internet that the RA owners won’t have on RA then they can follow Crazy Chester and set up their own blogs, where they will undoubtedly have bazillions of readers within a few days, just like her.

This site provides a reasonable platform for a usually interesting exchange of views by a usually interesting group of people. The moderation helps to keep it that way. I dips me lid to all involved.

For the alternative, go to any unmoderated forum and see the sort of deranged abuse it usually degenerates to after about a dozen posts. Somebody must have coined a name for that phenomenon by now.

Having read some of that site, I’m glad for the moderation. Probably good idea to get the Police involved for a number of reasons, best let them know anyway. Anyone getting done for postering/stickering outside of the provided concrete community boards etc? I know Mr Johnny Hargreaves had a real issue with it years ago…

I just had a look and came up with one question….Why?

Why bother. Particulaly since they are random comments in threads you don’t really understand what the conversation was about in the first place.

Someone needs a hobby I suppose.

So it may be a “Lynch” mob controlling this site?

You should use the photo in this article as your new facebook photo.

If its any consolation, one of our favourite local bloggers in our new community, the ever angry Brian Ward, has had even worse threats to deal with..

One of the problems with RiotACT is that people see everything to do with RiotACT and Johnboy as one and the same. I’ve heard even my own friends rant about JohnBoy and RiotACT and miss the point that JB may well be opposed to the view being expressed by some random contributor. That’s what makes this site great. RiotACT allows people to express their own opinions and not have them censored if they don’t comply with whatever point the site is trying to get across.

As an example, there are many rabid anti bicycle people on RiotACT, most are of course, complete idiots, but the funniest aspect is that JB isn’t shy of regularly riding bikes, even freak bikes.

Keep up the great work JB and RiotACT.

At the risk of being a 2 post nutbag, could the offender possibly be………Crazy Chester?

The stickers do look pretty cool, just checked out the other site and it is boring. Did a bit of self searching and got 1 out of 2 possible hits, I must be getting less moderateable in my old age.

As for the point of the other persons site, are they pissed about being moderated all the time? Sure I have been moderated before but have never cared enough about it to make a site dealing with it.

Too much time on some peoples hands I think. I get the impression that the site owner wears tin foil hats, sits in his skype-cave (toilet) and thinks JB is his arch enemy (god i wish i had an arch-enemy, JB you lucky bugger).

I really couldn’t be arsed.

Really piss me off and I follow the lead of my friendly barman Comrade Molotov

I’m obviously not trying hard enough, I did a search at that website, and didn’t see my name once (obviously not trying hard enough). There are however quite a few posts there from what I would call “the usual suspects”.

I do get the feeling there are lawyers for various parties who are right now reading over that website with a fine tooth comb.

What a bizarre thing to do and what an utter waste of time and stomach acid. Glad I’m not trying to conceal my own identity since it throws up your login name too.

What a bizzare use of their time, but then again I have the kind of job where I cop this kind of strangely displaced anger at the world too. It sucks. For what it is worth, it is usually people who have some major issues in their life which they are reluctant to devote any time or energy to because it requires facing their own flaws head on and they can’t find the stength to do that. So they displace all that anxious energy and rage onto something or someone else.

Ah…so you work with my ex-wife, then? 🙂

For someone so keen to stick your image all over town they seem strangely keen to remain anonymous themselves. Don’t worry about lawyers – I’d be contacting the police. It’s the kind of thing an unstable person would do IMO.

Oooohhhh….shudder…that’s not a nice place. I don’t think I’ll go there again.

I assume this individual is using some sort of scrip to detect and repost deleted comments?

Have you considered messing with them by posting comments (which have content specifically intended for their site) then modding them off your own site….

Can you confirm or deny reptoid involvement in this sticker campaign?

ps. it really is a nice photo.

Holy smokes, the flaw has been fixed. Now kindly DMCA this nutter into oblivion!

I’m disappointed I’ve only been modded once. I’ll have to try harder. 🙂
