Auditor-General not pleased with road safety progress

The Auditor-General has announced a new report: Follow-up Audit: Implementation of Audit Recommendations on Road Safety.

The auditor does not seem very pleased with progress:

Overall, TAMS made mixed progress in implementing recommendations from Performance Audit Report No. 4 of 2006, Road Safety. The Department implemented four of the seven recommendations made in this report, and partially implemented two others.

TAMS had included recommendations not fully implemented in its current Road Safety Action Plan to be actioned.

There had been slow progress towards addressing safety issues relating to learner motorcyclists and repeat offenders.

Even though your comments are tongue in cheek Shauno, I reckon your pretty much right. Revenue is required. Traffic engineering measures take $$$$$$. The current approach seems to be ad hoc and re-active. It’s like trying to rebuild the Kings Hwy with a bucket and spade. The dodgy remedial works on the GDE is the prime example.

There does seem to be good interaction with the stakeholders though. Motorcycle Users Group (MUG)/ Bicycle Users Group (DUG). ‘Mugs’ and ‘bugs’- how approprite.
