Auditor general under-funded

By johnboy - 26 May 2009 5

The ACT’s Auditor-General Tu-Pham has been a source of unrelenting embarrassment to the Stanhope government. So it comes as no surprise to see an ABC story on concerns that the Auditor is being under-funded.

Auditor-General Tu Pham has told a Legislative Assembly estimates committee that her Department is unable to audit most of the Government’s spending because of a lack of funding.

She says her department needs an extra $400,000 in the last Budget to maintain its current level of auditing but its funding was not increased.

It seems there are 100 areas of concern to Ms Pham, but the funding will cover just eight audits a year.

What’s Your opinion?

This is one agency head that is worth every dollar. Tu Pham has done some sterling work shining light on the activities of the Stanhope governmnet, and now she’s being starved of funds in revenge.

I’d just like to know eher the Libs are on this – they are probably laying low because they know that one day they’ll be back on the Treasury benches and then the torch will be aimed their way.

If you read the linked article, it shows pretty clearly where the libs stand from Brendan Smyth’s point of view anyway.

A well established technique to ensuring that your little nasties stay under the carpet is to never stir them up. Looks like a money saving strategy to me!

With Stanhope also facing the embarrasssment of supposedly insufficient funding to address audit findings… The recent audit of respite care provided by Disability ACT included a statement that the non-government sector was able to provide these services at a “significantly” lower cost. Perhaps Stanhope should ask the community organisations to take over.
