August Foodie Adventures

I get so excited about food – taking photos of it, tasting it and telling people about it. I recently started a food blog http://foodpornjournal.blogspot.com.au to share my love of food with others. So here’s a breakdown of my foodie adventures in August.

Brunch at Mocan & Green Grout in civic – a cute and quirky café that reminds me of Melbourne, and at Ricetta in Manuka – a pizzeria that do breakfast pizzas, breakfast calzones and lots of egg dishes.

The new kid on the block at the Narrabundah shops is Mint Rd. A small café serving coffee (check out their gorgeous green Italian coffee machine), breakfast and lunch. I’m keen to go back and try their signature smoked lamb mint aioli sandwich for lunch.

One of my favourite restaurants in Canberra, Sage, has introduced their new ‘Taste and Test’ menu for diners to rate their food (on a cute scorecard stamped on the table) to gain customer feedback. Heavily discounted at only $60 for 5 courses – totally worth it! This is only running until the end of September.

Morks is moving from Florey to the Kingston Foreshore in September. A group of friends and I decided to try out their 7 course tasting menu before their Florey restaurant shut down. And what an AMAZING dinner that was. Absolutely flawless and beautifully presented. Can’t wait for it to re-open.

I’d heard that a new temporary pop up restaurant, 10 Yards, was being run by the same guys from Two Before Ten. The 10 Yards concept is based on sourcing fresh produce from 10 regional farms or ‘yards’. Such a great idea. Delicious fresh food but small portions. They’re remaining open only until the second week of September so get in quick!

As part of the Fireside Festival, held each August, another of my favourite restaurants Poachers Pantry holds a degustation dinner. It never disappoints. Special mention to the milk custard, rhubarb, quinoa and white chocolate crumble – genius! (and gluten-free).

I tried the duck breast and confit stuffed duck neck at the 5 star Konoba restaurant at Hotel Realm. Yum! The wagyu beef blade pie looks amazing too.

I checked out the busy and highly popular Dickson Dumpling House – twice just to be sure. 1) for the banquet, and 2) to try out the dumplings. It’s a bit hit and miss but the great dishes include shredded dry chili beef, shantung lamb and pepper beef with handmade noodles.

For chocolate overload, the Koko Black annual Winter Evenings of Chocolate or dessert degustation night is a must-eat event. 5 courses of chocolatey desserts based on the store’s current selection of chocolates. This years theme was truffles. Great for chocolate and/or dessert lovers! I reviewed more desserts at Ricardo’s Café for their amazing cakes.

A pretty good month for food!
