Australia Day Fireworks on the Lake

The Australia Day fireworks were held on Lake Burley Griffin last night. They started at 9pm and ran for about 15 minutes. I must say it was more than I expected and was great quite spectacular. Plenty of people were lining the shores on both sides of the bridge. Too bad some genius decided to turn the fountain on near the end, soaking the crowd on the northern shorline. None the less, it was still worth seeing.

Fireworks are so 90s…

We saw the fountain drift towards the shore from our position at the end of ANZAC Ave – big whoops that one.

Our position was much more relaxed than mixing it with the crowd at regatta Point like we did last year. We thought the fireworks from the Carillon and Questacon were generally a bit lame in comparison – they could spread them out a bit for better effect.
Thought NYE was pretty good this year actually and went on for quite a while.

Yeah, I thought the show was surprisingly good too. Though we did wonder if the fireworks from the site near Questacon were actually a part of the show or not – they seemed unsynchronised with everything else, and kept going for a little while after the show had supposedly finished!

There was what looked like a green laser playing over the fountain just after it started, it could have been part of the show or could just as easily been some moron with a green laser pointer but whatever it was meant to be it only lasted around 10 seconds and then was gone while the fountain continued.

Yep, after that I immediately drove home and had a shower. I haven’t been to any other fireworks in Canberra and I wasn’t expecting them to be anywhere as good as they were. The guys with flares on the jet ski’s and wakeboards were pretty cool.

Swaggie – yes, the water fountain starting up was a very unfortunate part of what was otherwise a good fireworks display. I’m not sure if it was deliberate (as in, use the fountain as a feature of the fireworks display) or if it was a timed operation that they didn’t think to control, but lots of people had to make a run for it, because of the high wind blowing all the fountain water into the crowd. It was particularly unpleasant for people with small children. And with the quality of the Lake water an issue recently, I was a tad concerned.

How did the fireworks compare to the Canberra day ones?

Gotta agree with Hingo – a wonderful display and they made the NYE fireworks pale into insignificance. The crowd on the south side missed whatever part of the display took place near OPH as the trees screened the view but the lake and Bridge displays were stunning. I did wonder about the crowd getting wet when I saw the fountain come on…

What an awesome shot. I heard the fireworks loud and clear from Weston but couldn’t see them.
