sunset over the National Museum

So this was the view my friends and I had as we downed Coopers Pale, swam, and listened to a very mediocre Hottest 100 before the fireworks.

Some people don’t like Canberra and I just don’t get it.

Does anyone know where they all sleep? I had no idea canberra played host to so many!

We actually went for a walk through Commonwealth Park last weekend at around 8am and watched as all the bats flew in to sleep for the day – they definitely number in the hundreds, and almost every tree we looked up had bats hanging out. See http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2008/02/21/2168504.htm for a bit more info, but I can say that the majority appear to sleep in Commonwealth Park and can be quite well camouflaged so high up.

beautiful sunset shot JB

I was actually really amazed by the hundreds(?) of bats that flew over the lake between 830 and 9.
On the southern cross cruise we had an amazing view of them all crossing the lake from the north side.

Where they sleep depends on if it is a sitting week or they are back in their home electorate.

Remember the 80s, when every kid and their dog was swimming in the lake? And nobody thought nout of it? The quality of the lake water has, by and large, been improving for about 30 years, due in large part to the clean up of mine sites upstream on the Queanbeyan and Molonglo rivers. In the same period, we’ve just become more aware about water quality (NCA monitoring, lake closures etc) and more fussy about shit in general. (The same reason you don’t see unaccompanied nine and ten year olds running around Mount Ainslie and other nature reserves building cubbies and building jumps for their bikes like when I were a toe rag.)

Ergo, nothing much has changed at the lake (except the maintenance of its foreshores and swimming areas, which is another story altogether), and swimming in the lake is still totally awesome. It’s people’s attitudes that have changed.
