Auto Glass Recommendations?

A trip to the Tuggers dog park this evening left me with a broken passenger window courtesy of three upstanding young gentleman and their trusty hammer. While they successfully made off with my CD case full of many amateurishly burned CD’s, they oddly didn’t grab the lighter, valuable objects as I came sprinting after them, interrupting their good time. I know I know, how rude of me to interrupt.

Remembering lessons learned from watching years of cheesy American TV police dramas that taught me the important lesson of what part of the car to look at when later identifying it to the authorities, I memorised the rego and phoned it in to ACT’s finest. Fortunately the rego matched the vehicle description that I gave them. Unfortunately, the car was reported stolen this evening. It’s probably currently on fire somewhere out in Quangers.

Which brings me to my dilemma. Any recommendations for reliable, affordable auto glass replacement in the area given it’s also the easiest week of the year to find automotive repairs? My car is an ’07 Honda Jazz, if that matters to potential advisors. I say affordable as the car with the broken window is a new addition to the family and I’d only obtained insurance quotes on it a few days ago, but hadn’t actually settled on an insurer. Serendipitous, isn’t it?

Any more thoughts on this?

Some toerag did my rear passenger window, and nicked my GPS, outside Callam offices last night.

Need to get a new window.

I took my new/old car there for windscreen work just before taking it for its inspection. I got back in the car to find broken glass everywhere, from the seats to carpets to the steering wheel cover. This meant when I took it to the inspection an hour later, I had to warn the mechanic about broken glass everywhere. Its understandable if one or two pieces of glass fly around, thats inevitable, but even 18 months later Im still finding glass bits stuck in my hand. So, by all means use this business but ensure you make a point that you want everything cleaned up after theyre done.

Goodonyer Wharrgarbll, my hat’s off to you. It takes a lot of courage to run towards a bunch of villains and frighten them off, and I admire and commend your actions.

The same thing happened to my wife a while ago, with her stolen purse eventually being discovered a few months later amongst a big pile of purses and wallets down behind a building in Hume. I wish I’d had the opportunity to scare the bastards off when they were breaking into her car.

I’m sorry to hear about the damage to your vehicle, and I’m glad you came out of it without any damage to yourself. Sorry I can’t help with any recommendations for repairs…

Insurance? Hasn’t anyone heard of the excess on their policies? Insurance is not just some magic cure for a wrong, both sides end up paying somehow.

Include NRMA windscreens in your calls – not sure if they do side windows but if you are a member the prices I got for a windscreen was $100 less than the name brands and they came to where my car was parked.

Don’t worry about the insurance on something as simple as a window. The cost to replace yourself is probably cheaper than the excess and potentially higher premiums over a number of years if you were to make a claim. And before someone mentions windscreen damage, that is a different kettle of fish and covers just windscreens, not side or rear windows.

Sorry jj_2011, it wasn’t your car.

Sounds like last night was fairly busy for thievery.

Get out the Yellow Pages and shop around. You’ll be surprised at the price disparities.

awesome that you caught them doing it

if you’d obtained a written quote then it was *probably* insured.

cost of repairs will be less than the insurance excess would’ve been?

Hi, yesterday afternoon my car was stolen, any chance you could give me a description of this car? it could be my car. =(

If its simply a door window, you can probably pick up a new window from a wreckers for under $50 and fit it yourself in under an hour. When chasing for a new drivers side window for my car, I called a few glass places and was quoted upto $200. I then called my friendly wrecker, he told me $10 for the glass, and also mentioned that one of the glaziers Id contacted had just called him about 15min earlier for the same piece of glass and was given the same quote. Even proper auto-glaziers will simply buy old glass and charge through the roof to install it, with the owner non-the-wiser.

Please tell me you got a good look at their faces, clothes and features and told the police.

Re insurance, I bought a new (to me) car recently and decided to go with Coles insurance (as in the supermarket). They are owned by Wesfarmers which have been around for years and should be reputable (as reputable as insurance companies get…). Premium was a lot cheaper than NRMA and AAMI. Fine print about claiming seems much the same as other insurance companies and as a bonus you get vouchers that give you triple fuel discount at Shell servos.

Insurance taken care of first thing this morning. It didn’t leave the garage without it. You can sleep easier tonight. Living and learning reminded my frugal side to get over it.

Thanks for the heads up on Instant Windscreens. They seem to have the best prices so far.

Whatever happened to getting a cover note before you pick up the keys? Oh well…

We had an excellent experience this year with Instant Windscreens, Geelong St Fyshwick ph 132444.

It sucks that this happened, no question.

That said, the car should never have left your garage without being insured. No excuses.
