Awesome YouTube footage coming to Canberra as gunsight cams come to police tasers

The ABC brings word that video cameras are going to be fitted to ACT Policing’s tasers:

The cameras will record the moments leading up to when a Taser is used, and the footage will be used by authorities as part of regular reviews.

The move is designed to silence critics of the devices by providing great accountability.

Jim Torr from the Australian Federal Police Association says it will provide protection for officers.

Now can we get them on the glocks too?

UPDATE 13/06/12 11:22 The Greens have let their pleasure be known.

I think this is good. Just like to note to those above, Tasers and rubber bullets are “Less lethal” alternatives, not “Non-lethal”.
This might be ivory tower kind of thinking, but they should also be trained in achieving compliance without tools. We can already see in the American example what happens when law enforcement thinks of pepper spray or taser as compliance tool. Not everyone survives it.
It is not enough to say “Don’t do anything wrong and you’ll be fine”. We have video evidence aplenty on Youtube that that is not the case. You have a hammer, you start wanting nails.

Luckily my association with them is limited now due to their fked up morals, it’s pretty cute though that you would consider yourself to even be in contention to be associated with me.

A polite way for them to wrestle someone to the ground would be to use the pressure point technics they have been taught, I’ve had them done to me on a few occasions as a test dummy and have been dropped like a sack of potatoes.

Well done, you picked up spelling and grammatical errors, my teachers use to do that too and do you know what happened to them? They are still teachers. Those who ‘can’ – do, those who ‘can’t’ – teach….. or work for the government

Now that you’ve extended your argument, I’m more inclined to listen to your point of view. I don’t think I ever considered myself to be in contention for your association. I’m sure there are far more suitable people around the shop.

Luckily, I neither teach nor work for the government.

I still don’t see the problem in using a taser on someone who is non-compliant, with a history of violence towards police, had been holding a knife/weapon.

*had* been holding a knife. which he relinquished, before assuming a completely submissive pose.

yep, he had it coming.

A completely submissive pose would have been laying down, like he was asked to.

So he was submissive … but they should taze him because he wasn’t submissive enough?

I didn’t say he was submissive, genius.

Cops get off on hurting people and controlling them, they love it, because it’s the only way they can command respect – hiding behind their gun and badge. I’ve had many conversations with mates who are cops and I’m always left wanting to knock them out over the joy they get from such things as raiding house even if there isn’t anything to be found, just because they get to mess peoples sh*t up or using excessive force to keep someone down who aren’t particularly a threat to them, so I can only imagine the joy some would get from tazing someone.

If you find yourself “always left wanting to knock them out over the joy they get”, I’d suggest that you:
– get yourself some different mates. No, not me.
– consider your moral crisis from continuing to associate with people that you so violently disagree with.

There is a difference between force and excessive force, i.e. I could politely wrestle someone to the ground or I wrestle them to the ground, then once I have them there I could use my knee to smash their head into the ground. I have no problem with the police doing their job, if that is how they want to make themselves feel important then good for them, but just because they have their little badge and gun doesn’t give them the right to inflict unneassary pain on another human.

How do you politely wrestle someone to the ground?
“Verily hail, good citizen. Please do not be alarmed while I place my hands upon your person. Oh, it feels like you’ve been working out. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll ask you to please lower yourself to the ground while I support your weight. Splendid! Unfortunately, I am going to have to ask you if you could please lay face down. I know, there is a bit of dew on the grass. Sadly, I wasn’t able to find a clean sheet to place underneath you.”
You have “no problem with the police doing their job”, then belittle their job. I’d suggest you have a lot of problems with the police doing their job.

Classic call, thank you for your input, were you born with such whit or is it a skill you have aquired through years of loneliness and rejection? I’m sorry I don’t drive a white commodore though, but plenty of cops do because after all most of them are uneducated bogans, which is where I’m assuming you were going with that? Just because someone doesn’t agree with police tatics doesn’t make them a bogan, it makes them a human who prefers to question than blindly follow.

I do believe that if you’re going to claim someone is uneducated, it may be worthwhile considering your spelling and grammar.

Feel free to rail against my comment; I’d almost say that I look forward to it.

Police have to deal with violent fkwits. And the only way to deal with violent fkwits is tazers (some would argue Glocks). By all means put a camera on it and hold the constable accountable. I have no problem with that at all.

So what purpose does the spray have if coppers cannot use it for compliance? Surely you are not suggesting the only way to deal with violent offenders is with guns and tasers?

But coppers should not be expected to put their lives at risk so that some uncompliant violent asshat can be spared the grief they are so happy to deal out.

I thought risking your life was in the job description. An occupational hazard if you like. Don’t we train them to deal with these situations?

You seriously think you could ‘politely’ wrestle a berserk male adult (and we’re not even talking a drunken 6’5 Islander) to the ground and keep them there ‘politely’?

Have you ever wrestled someone down to the ground who doesn’t want to be on the ground? If someone doesn’t want to be on the ground, there is no polite way to keep them there.

I don’t see the problem.

Tasers are not compliance devices – that’s the problem. They’re a non-lethal alternative to firearms.

The camera fitting is a great, practical idea, and both the police force (via Jim Torr – great representative BTW) and civil rights groups appear to be welcoming it. Win!

I never said they were “compliance devices” – if there is even such a thing. I don’t think they are an outright alternative to firearms, either. They serve a different purpose. There is still very much a place for firearms on the belt of a police officer.

I still don’t see the problem in using a taser on someone who is non-compliant, with a history of violence towards police, had been holding a knife/weapon.

Almost +1. Tasers are a LESS LETHAL alternative to firearms.

Fail to comply with a lawful police direction, then they can make you comply, Raise your fists to a copper, then they should raise a spray or tazer, raise a edged weapon then they should raise a firearm.

Are you for real? Non violent refusal to obey a coppers order … that’s a taserin. Raise your fists … that’s a taserin. Run away … that’s a taserin. RBT … blow into this taser. I guess cops don’t need training anymore. Everything can be done with a taser.

Cops are trained to take people down without the use of a weapon and should do so as long as the offender is unarmed themselves. Tazers are a deadly weapon and should be treated as such.

So you’re okay with cops using force to take people down instead of a tazer, having just complained about cops using excessive force to keep someone down?

So easy sitting in front of computer to tell someone else to get in nice and close to someone known to be violent and be gentle with them.

I don’t see the problem.

You don’t see the problem when a person who is not armed and not making any threatening movements towards police is tazered? Your moral compass is way off mate.

One way or another, you’re going to comply with their instructions. You can do it the easy way or the hard way.

Previous posts will tell you that I am usually the first to agree with comments like this but in this case I see police non compliance from a worrying individual. I would use taser in these conditions as OH&S would dictate.
