ACT Policing has arrested a 14-year-old girl after a vehicle pursuit last night (Sunday, 27 November).

Around 11.50pm, members from Belconnen Police Station were conducting mobile patrol on Baldwin Drive, Kaleen when they observed a white Mitsubishi Lancer travelling at excessive speed on Ginninderra Drive.

Police turned onto Ginninderra Drive and activated emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to pull the car over. The car accelerated away at a speed approaching 130km/hr in an 80km/hr zone and a pursuit commenced.

As the car approached intersection of Mouat Street, the driver went through a red light. The driver then failed to negotiate the corner, loosing control of the car, striking a concrete traffic island.

After being assessed by ACT Ambulance Service, the youth was apprehended and taken to City Watch House.

The youth will face the ACT Children’s Court today (Monday, 28 November) charged with traffic offences including illegal use of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, not stopping when signalled by police and reckless/dangerous driving.

‘Self interested road user’ … what that I don’t want someone close to be to be maimed by an unlicensed teenager driving a car at exccessive speeds. How selfish of me!

I get you have the mindset of a self interested road user. What with all the ridiculous contradictions that entails. It is the child that has the real risk of injury or death.

The fourteen year old (almost old enough to drive legally, vote, drink, hold down a job, pay tax) has made her choice. Other people on the road have not made the choice to put themselves in her path and suffer the consequences. I’m not without sympathy, if she’s making such stupid risky choices she needs help and I hope she gets it, but behaviour which is dangerous to others needs more than a there there dear, you’re only young.

People should remember she’s only fourteen years old … and deserves to be treated with some compassion.

I struggle with this mindset. This child could have killed someone; someone driving to work, picking up their kids, going about their life while doing the right thing.. Do you get that!

I was stupid when I was 14. I stole bubblegum from a local store, I would watch TV my parents didn’t agree with and I would muck up in class but, I never stole a car and drove it at 130km/h around a local neighbourhood narrowly missing road islands and other road users.

Get real. These kids should be treated harshly by the juvenile justice system, instead of being molly-coddled so they never learn a lesson and end up at the bottom of society’s food chain.

Why be a decent human being when we are shown so little decency? Well done Poetix.

She’s earned our comtempt, let her earn our respect.

Being a decent human being shouldn’t be determined by how someone else behaves towards you. Are are you a reactor?

I treat people as they treat me. What’s wrong with that?

Would you rather my swift and terrible retribution be proactive?

No sympathy from me.

She may have been a brown person, in which case running from cops is entirely justified.

We’re you dropped at birth?

Sorry that should read ‘were you dropped at birth?’

The virtue of compassion requires empathy and sympathy for the suffering of others. The servile sycophants of RA have no virtue. They need only apply “scum” to a sentence to unleash a stream of vitriol against children. Why do adults do this?

Shes 14. Its a difficult age. She is far more likely to be the victim of adults with no virtues.

People should remember she’s only fourteen years old. I know it was a potentially lethal situation, but she is very young and deserves to be treated with some compassion. Thankfully she didn’t hurt herself badly or hit others, through pure luck.

Why treat this scum with any compassion? If you’re old enough to do the crime you’re old enough to take the punishment.

Yes the parents are most likely to blame here, because i knew at 14 what was legal and illegal and what was a good choice or a bad choice. Sure I made some bad choices, but they generally didn’t have the risks associated with speeding, alcohol and drugs etc.

The issue is, what do you do with a 14 yo commiting these crimes. While most likely she has come from a less than exception parenting environment, It may not be the case either. Good parents have out of control kids also.

I’m certain whatever is done, she won’t learn her lesson yet.

Yes, what do you do with a 14 yo commiting these crimes? Maybe her parents are struggling with a truly difficult situation not of their own making and need help. Or, perhaps more likely, the parents are part of the problem. Either way the innocent road using public should not be put at risk. If compassion is excusing her behaviour because she’s “very young” that’s not doing her or society any good! Kids her age have been capable of working, helping at the family farm/business, caring for siblings, looking after disabled parents, etc, ie showing some responsibility. She doesn’t need excuses. She needs to be told that she’s lucky she isn’t dead or a killer, and she therefore still has a chance to become a decent human being so she’s better get on with it!

I’ve been the victim of “youths” (children gives them too much of an aura of innocence) with no vitue often enough that the quality of my mercy is well and truly strained.

“Thankfully she didn’t hurt herself badly or hit others, through pure luck.”

She’s no angel if she’s hooning around like that. Thankfully she didn’t kill an innocent person. If she wiped herself out, well, that was her choice.

There was a white Ford Falcon travelling South along Drakeford Drive tonight that had no number plates and was being driven by either a very small man or a young boy.

Probably lived in Charnwood and has a brother who has a morbid fear of swans….

If she’d crashed into an oncoming car, that fate may have befallen the driver of the car. Hmmm how about a like for like punishment then if a speeding driver causes injury to another?

It is nice that ACT Policing has somewhere to go to receive a critique of their media releases… not everyone gets that luxury…

If all else fails, the AFP could take over media management for the Canberra Liberals.

I’m sure Jeremy and Alastair woudl love having to share the fax machine.
