Bad morning in Holt

First it’s the palm trees, now the apartment blocks.

The ABC has a snippet on a fire in the small hours of the morning forcing 70 apartment dwelling Holt residents onto the streets (every one of them no doubt grateful it wasn’t happening in July).

One wonders how many of them were clothed when they got out of the building.

The ‘small hours of the morning’ was an exaggeration. Was more like 10pm.

uhm.. last i was aware, the rubbish disposal room was locked, and a key had been provided to all relevant contractors.

oops. good point. Maybe that knowledge (not to mention the 2nd fire in a month) is good reason for the situation to change there…

Awesome, I better go steal me a car and burn some cardboard…

^ Thanks for posting that. Now the rest of Canberra is aware that that basement carpark is not locked.

brother lives there – though away ATM and not on 1st floor. He is always complaining about security in the complex. His ‘lock-up’ has been broken into twice – the first time he lost a great deal of personal effects (scuba equipment, bike etc). He just told me “For whatever crazy reason, the rubbish bins are stored in an enclosed space under the apartment blocks. The garbage collection agency doesn’t want to give each of their contractors the key for the area, so we leave it unlocked. That means every man and his dog gets in there and starts fires in the recycling hoppers.”

Whilst the units might be ‘brand new’ they were definitely built on the cheap to turn a quick profit… the company went into liquidation a short time after all apartments were sold, only to start business again with the name of the new apartment complex they built (and presumable repeating the process)… this absolved them of maintaining the apartments/complex.

Those units are only brand new too.

This is the second fire in this complex in a bit over a month. I live nearby and Holt is clearly the new Charnwood.
