BAMOASD 2013 another massive hit

Your correspondent didn’t get to the Multicultural Festival this year. Quite how I missed my favourite event of the year is a source of some confusion but it involves my girlfriend, who did go to the festival, without me. Suffice to say I’m not very happy about all that.

So I’ll just have to note the police are very excited they won the “best stall”.

Senator Kate Lundy thinks it was grand.

Joy Burch says they think it was the best ever:

ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs Joy Burch today praised the National Multicultural Festival organisers and the Canberra community for making the weekend’s celebrations a resounding success, with record crowds and no major incidents.

“The ACT Government is proud to have put on such an amazing show in our city’s Centenary year,” Ms Burch said.

“It is testament to our inclusive and welcoming community that we can have more than 100 ethnic communities side by side in the heart of our city and have a good time.”

Festival organisers from the ACT Office of Multicultural Affairs and Torres Strait Islander Affairs estimated the crowd exceeded the 250,000 who attended last year over the three days.

“The feedback from ACT Policing is that the crowd was overall well behaved, with no major incidents.

“Pleasingly, stall holders, too, were overall very responsible in the service of alcohol and food hygiene, which ensures that the Multicultural Festival remains a family-friendly event.”

I enjoyed my first taste of beer since Christmas at this. The Centenary beer from Wig and Pen. No meat on a stick for a weirdo like me, but it was all very pleasant.

The merry-go-round seemed to be going much faster than usual. Whether this was connected to my first beer since Christmas, or was a real thing, I cannot say.

The festival should be smoke-free.

Chips on a stick were great! Managed to get a seat between the chips on a stick stall and the Hellenic meat on a stick tent…pure heaven.

I do wish they would ban prams from the event though, I got ran over 4 times by fuming women pushing the damn things whilst trying to get a feed.

I do agree it was another great BAMOASD. I had a number of delectable morsels, some great Spanish black pudding, an rather good Korean pancake, apparently endorsed by Psy and a few new ciders. In previous years I went in the evening, this year I went at lunch (a Chinese NYE event planned for later) and found the crowd to be smaller than I had expected. I don’t know whether the heat was a factor.

The name needs to be changed to Beer And Chips On A Stick Day if the queue for these delicious deep fried treats was anything to go by.
