Urban renewal, transport, equality and jobs are on the agenda with new portfolios announced by Chief Minister Andrew Barr this morning.

Barr has taken on the new portfolio of urban renewal, which he says will promote garden suburbs and urban villages, bringing together infrastructure renewal with the promotion of social and cultural activity at a suburban level.

Mick Gentleman will take on the new portfolio of Minister for Roads and Parking, while incoming minister Yvette Berry will be responsible for portfolios including housing, community services, multicultural affairs and women. She will also assist the Chief Minister with social inclusion and equality.

After an embarrassing backflip on poker machine regulation earlier this month, Joy Burch will retain responsibility for education and training, police and emergency services, disability, racing and gaming and the arts.

Barr says that these ministries focus on creating a city that supports jobs.

“It is about working with local communities and business on local renewal projects – such as the shop renewals at Lyons and Scullin and the revitalisation of Farrer, Waramanga, New Acton and Braddon. It is also about an innovative transport system that takes a coordinated approach to buses, light rail, taxis, bicycles and cars. If our city is easier to get around, it is easier to do business,” he said in a statement.

“The Government will take every necessary decision to maintain economic activity, to encourage investment, and above all, to grow jobs.”

The portfolio responsibilities are as follows:

Andrew Barr, Chief Minister

  • Treasurer
  • Minister for Economic Development
  • Minister for Urban Renewal
  • Minister for Tourism and Events

Simon Corbell, Deputy Chief Minister

  • Attorney-General
  • Minister for Health
  • Minister for the Environment
  • Minister for Capital Metro

Joy Burch

  • Minister for Education and Training
  • Minister for Police and Emergency Services
  • Minister for Disability
  • Minister for Racing and Gaming
  • Minister for the Arts

Shane Rattenbury

  • Minister for Territory and Municipal Services
  • Minister for Justice
  • Minister for Sport and Recreation
  • Minister assisting the Chief Minister on Transport Reform

Mick Gentleman

  • Minister for Planning
  • Minister for Roads and Parking
  • Minister for Workplace Safety and Industrial Relations
  • Minister for Children and Young People
  • Minister for Ageing

Yvette Berry

  • Minister for Housing
  • Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs
  • Minister for Community Services
  • Minister for Multicultural Affairs
  • Minister for Women
  • Minister assisting the Chief Minister on Social Inclusion and Equality

What do you expect ? It’s more jobs for the boys.

It’s just plain embarrasing for both the ACT Government, the Territory and Ratepayers (who ultimarely are footing the bill). But it is so typical of the decision making of this ACT Government who are so comfortable with the support of the pro labor/greens voter base in the ACT, that they can just about do what ever they like – and they do get away with it.

Maybe we do need an ICAC here – where is the ACT Auditor General in all this ?

Hodges’ last two employers in Australia were Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard and we all know what happened to them.
Let’s hope the trend continues.

Well Chief Min Barr does have a new press officer to help him out with his new ministers; a Mr Tony Hodges. I’m sure he must have a considerable wealth of experience ( I seem to recall his name from somewhere )

I think he was instrumental in Julia Gillard losing one of her shoes at the Lobby Restaurant a couple of years ago. He sort of moved to London the next day.

“…Barr has taken on the new portfolio of urban renewal, which he says will promote garden suburbs and urban villages, bringing together infrastructure renewal with the promotion of social and cultural activity at a suburban level….”

Sounds terrifically interesting and exciting, doesn’t it? – but according to a report published earlier this week, this promised Nirvana has already arrived in one of our latest showcase suburbs –

“The Canberra suburb of Crace has been labelled a “disCrace” by one of its residents fed-up with its dirty and dishevelled state.

Shoulder-high weeds grow on verges and median strips while garbage is strewn throughout the suburb.

…… Residents have banded together to collect bagfuls of rubbish and weeds in the past few months in response to growing problems. ….

Large piles of thistles have been stacked on verges with Territory and Municipal Services collecting truckloads of weeds torn out by residents. …….

A Territory and Municipal Services spokeswoman said the directorate was assessing the maintenance of public open space in Crace to determine how to achieve a sustainable landscape that could be provided within the available budget.” [Canberra Chronicle, January 20, 2015]

If it weren’t so dismally depressing (and familiar), it would almost be funny.

Now, let me get this right :

Barr : Minister for Urban Renewal (incl. along the tram line ?).
Corbell : Minister for Canberra Metro (aka the tram).
Rattenbury : Minister for TAMS and Minister assisting Barr on Transport Reforms.
Gentleman : Minister for Roads, Parking and Planning.

Will be interesting, with the potential overlap, to see how they all work together to come up with a coherent strategy and plan – that works I mean. Who was it who said that we arn’t over governed in the ACT ?

God save the queen.

Not punishing Joy Burch was a bad move.

I agree, Masquara.

We have a Minister for Children and Young People, a Minister for Ageing, a Minister for Women but no Minister for Men.
In the ACT (of all places) why do we need a Minister for Women? I mean they already run almost everything.

Not punishing Joy Burch was a bad move.
