ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has congratulated Malcolm Turnbull on becoming Australia’s next Prime Minister.

In a statement issued today, Minister Barr said:

I would like to congratulate Malcolm Turnbull on his elevation to the leadership of the federal Liberal party and his imminent appointment as the Prime Minister of Australia.

Last night Mr Turnbull rightly pointed out that it is a very exciting time in Australia. Our country needs strong leadership from the federal Government, and I hope Mr Turnbull will bring this leadership and face some of the economic challenges the nation is experiencing.

Now is the time for serious progress on a number of key areas that impact upon Canberrans and the broader Australian public- primarily the Commonwealth’s funding cuts to hospitals and schools. This was a broken promise by the Coalition that will have significant ramifications in the years to come. I hope Mr Turnbull will be willing to work closely with the State and Territory leaders on reversing these decisions to ensure that all Australians continue to have access to quality public health and education.

I would encourage Mr Turnbull to prioritise progress on reform of the Federation and a serious discussion on taxation reform. It’s also crucial that the Government tackles marriage equality and climate change – two areas in which Tony Abbott failed to take significant action in line with community expectations. The rollout of the National Broadband Network should also be a priority for a Turnbull government, especially to areas of Canberra that are experiencing poor internet service.

What we saw last night is another example of the brutality of modern politics. I wish Tony Abbott and his family all the best for the future.

I look forward to working with Mr Turnbull in the future.

When I went to get a passport for my child, I took in two documents:
1. document proving my identity
2. my child’s birth certificate showing me as the father

I was asked for a marriage certificate. I said, “why do you want that? these documents establish both identity and paternity, what more do you need?”
The response was,
“Without a marriage certificate, your child is not legal issue and we can’t accept your claim to paternity and therefore your child has no claim to ctizenship”.

So, I am very much in favour of equality and of dismantling every facet of the State’s use of “marriage” to marginalise people.

Does single-sex marriage even being to address this inequality?
No.

“Crucial” that Turnbull address single sex marriage? I can’t think of any perspective on reality where that claim could be even remotely valid.

What clowns we have as elected representatives sometimes….

Normally I’m with you Henry, but something odd happened with your application here. I’ve just done a renewal for a child, which is treated as a new application. The only time a marriage cert comes into it is if the mother has signed with a surname not as indicated on the childs birth certificate

That makes no sense because how then do children from de facto relationships get passports, not to mention the fact that a marriage certificate will not make any connection to children (most children tend to be born after the issue of a marriage certificate). Something’s got muddled.

Where (and when) did you go to get your child’s passport? A marriage certificate is definitely not required to get a passport for a child, you only need the following:

– Assemble all the original documents you need to support the application eg full Australian birth certificate, proof of citizenship*, citizenship certificate, court orders, and the child’s current or expired Australian passport if they have one
– Bring two identical colour photos less than six months old, and ensure one of these has been endorsed on the back by the child’s guarantor
– Bring proof of your own identity which has a photograph, signature and residential address

You would only need a marriage certificate if you wanted to change the name on your passport…

Somebody get Barr a dictionary so he can look up the word “crucial” and find out what it really means. Maybe they could also show him footage from when his Labor colleagues failed to pass SSM. Multiple times.
