Barr v. CT stoush rolls on

Yesterday’s blazing row between the ACT Treasurer Andrew Barr and the Canberra Times has entered a second day.

Noel Towell has been put on the case and has had a chat to the Chief Minister on the issues.

Oddly enough no mention is made of the fireworks on facebook or Twitter.

But Barr is not content with the hose down and has launched a lengthy spray into the ether. It doesn’t quite resort to block caps, but there’s some emphatic use of bold text in there:

The Canberra Times article by Ewa Kretowicz “Barr set to fast-track Brumbies units plan” (23 January 2012) has completely misrepresented the actions of the Government and is factually incorrect.

The journalist has confused and merged a number of separate processes required to be completed under the Planning and Development Act before any residential development at the Brumbies site in Griffith could occur.

It is unfortunate that the information provided to the journalist to clarify these processes on the evening prior to the publication of the article was not included in the article.

Firstly, no decision has been made to date to change the zoning under the Territory Plan.

The planning minister Simon Corbell referred DV307 to the Legislative Assembly’s planning committee and the minister is required to take into account the committee’s report before he can approve a variation and table it in the Assembly. The legislation provides for a five-day disallowance period for any Territory Plan variation that is tabled, which means that it is up to the Assembly to determine whether a variation can commence or not.

So to be absolutely clear, only the Legislative Assembly can vary the Territory Plan.

Reporting on the ACT Labor Government should be about as hard as shooting fish in a barrel (however, I note that Mythbusters demonstrated that was actually quite hard).

That’s all I can add without stepping over any lines.

I’m sure Andrew Barr’s colleagues would describe him the same way. But wait – does staying late and working hard corelate to professionalism and competence? IMHO that’s an empahtic no – in both of their cases.

I’m actually getting a bit of a kick watching two of the most inept and amatuer organisations in this fair city call each other out. Kinda like a game of Battleship for the Blind…

Twitter is great for pointless personal blathering of the “Hey everyone, I just added a new sample to my smegma collection this morning” variety, because such nonsense can be safely ignored.

For matters of public importance it is, and forever will be rubbish.

You’re not using it right. Twitter is great for sharing links to interesting news stories. Barr might not be using it right either but if you follow the right people it’s a great tool.

Yes, you’re right of course. And if Twitter (or Twitter usage) evolves in that direction I think it may well become a very useful tool. I’m biased because at the moment I have limited experience with the product. For example, my wife has a friend (who I suspect is a narcissist) who Twitters constantly about things like “Having sardines on toast for breakfast. Mmmm….”.

So, it’s all seemed like crap. And the ACT government’s Twitter forums, or whatever they were called seemed like crap. And Mr Barr’s petulant online tantie seemed like further crap. But I can see that signing up for a direct newsfeed from from a serious man like Roman Quaedvlieg might be worthwhile, so I’ll bite my tongue and give it a go.

And as a final point I agree that Mr Barr *was* using Twitter incorrectly.

Whatever the facts may be, Mr Barr’s undignified ranting on Twitter does him no credit.

In fact, the use of Twitter by any politician does that individual no credit.

So what, there are a tonne of people who are dedicated, work hard and often stay back late to get work finished.

How is that relevant to the article??

Interesting that there weren’t any words like ‘competent’, ‘smart’, ‘skilled’ or ‘thorough’ in that post.

Even assuming the journo got it wrong, she still has about 4,999 errors to go to catch Barr and his fellow ministers in the error ridden incompetence race.

Oh not every ratbag!

And the CT still has its subs and more journalists than I can dream of!

My comment on the Canberra Times website had a sentence cut out. I questioned what exactly the journalist said to Tony Powell. Don’t expect to see many critical letters to be published. Also, it was Simon Corbell who used call- in powers relating to the Kingston Foreshores, not Andrew Barr. It must be hard to work at the Canberra Times these days with less journos & without sub-editors and less classified ad revenue.
The professional journalism of the late Rod Campbell, an old Manuka LAPAC rep, is missed!

How lucky we are here on RiotACT with JB. Free expression means every ratbag can have their say.
