TAMS has announced that they’ve finally got the Barton Highway open after the bridge collapse.

The Barton Highway will be re-opened for traffic at 3.30 pm this afternoon following the
completion of demolition works on the Gungahlin Drive Extension Stage 2 bridge collapse.

“I am pleased to report that traffic conditions will be back to normal on Barton Highway for
those travelling home from work today,” Tony Gill, Director of Roads ACT said.

“The demolition work has been successfully completed and a detailed inspection has been
undertaken by Roads ACT to certify that Barton Highway is safe to reopen.

“I would like to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation while the Barton Highway
has been closed.

“It is likely the bridge collapse has resulted in a four to six month delay for the construction of
the bridge with a revised completion date of mid-2011. However this is still well within the
overall completion date of June 2012 for the GDE project,” Mr Gill said.

Hooray.
The traffic jams around Mitchell have been crazy the last two weeks. With all the other roadworks we have around our area, this collapse was like the “perfect storm” of traffic mayhem creation.

It just goes to underline the stupidity that was John Hargreaves as transport minister hanging everything on a single 2-lane road as the completion solution for all Gungahlin commuting needs, and refusing to listen to anything we (GCC and the wider community) said.
