In the tradition of JJJ’s Beat the Drum Competition, the ACT Democrats are bringing back the fun and the excitement in a new competition.
Beat the Bastards

Being the underdogs, unlike the other parties we don’t have any money for expensive advertising. So lets do something different we decided. And while we’re at it, lets make this election campaign that hasn’t officially started yet some fun.

We need your help! Want to get involved! Help make your vote count!

The idea is you display the Australian Democrats logo, name or slogan in the most publicly visible, legal way possible, take a photo and send it to us.

The Australian Democrats slogans are:
Australian Democrats
Keep the bastards honest
Bring back Balance
Vote Vogt.

The day after the election a panel (whenever that might be) of not-so-expert but passionate judges will convene and judge the photo entries and award the prize an (IPOD Shuffle) and of course fame and fortune will be all yours!

The rules;
1. Don’t do any thing illegal
The ACT City Rangers have jurisdiction over public signage. Their
rules specify that:

I. Any posters stuck in the ground must use tomato stakes. No metal or star stakes may be used.
II. The maximum size of any posters is 900x1200cm, that is, not much larger than A0.
III. Posters may not be attached to any government property. This includes street lights, bridges and roundabouts.
IV. Posters may not be placed within 20m of any intersection.
V. No more than 20 posters may be exhibited by any one party in the ACT.
VI. Posters on the federal highways (Barton, Northbourne, etc) require specific permission (so don’t do it).

For more information also have a look at the AEC guidelines

2. Don’t do anything that is in bad taste. We are after funny and clever, not stupid or in bad taste.

3. Don’t hurt yourself or anyone else, please!

4. The ACT Democrats reserves the right to publish your photograph on its own website or other places on the internet as it deems appropriate. You will be acknowledged with your name and date of publication. Any photographs of illegal or bad taste will not be displayed. If necessary, photographs may be referred to the Federal Police in the event of illegal activity.

How to enter:
1. Go out there and put your sign in a good place. It can be permanent or temporary (see the rules above).
2. Simply take a digital photo of your entry.
3. email it to yads@vic.democrats.org.au with your contact details (full name, mobile, home phone and email address).

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us at

“FFS – This is just a political advertisement, what’s it doing on RA?”

I agree that it pertains to a political party and advertising, but its a party attempting to do something different and entertaining to promote their image and candidates (rather than the same dull stuff we see from the major parties). It also is relevant to the ACT democrats and their campain in the ACT in the lead up to the next election.

OUch I think the Uluru owners get crabby when their rock is used for postering don’t they? Isn’t there some (usually ignored) over-the-top law about it?

FFS – This is just a political advertisement, what’s it doing on RA?

What’s more worrying is statements like “this election campaign that hasn’t officially started yet” and “The day after the election … (whenever that might be)”.

The writs have been issued, so the election campaign *is* officially underway, and the date has been set (November 24). You would think Norvan would be across this…

hingo_VRCalaisV69:18 am 26 Oct 07

Who the f**k are the democrats?

I’ve got a pic i’d like to upload

I’d like pictures of NSD on mine…

I think the glory is worth more than the Shuffle – although if they got Lyn Allison, Andrew Bartlett or NSD to autograph it, then it might be worth more.

At least they (obviously) haven’t been spending tax payers money on their advertising campaigns – unlike some major parties *cough* Liberals *cough*

Who?

Joe Canberran6:33 am 26 Oct 07

An iPod shuffle – so what if the prize is not worth a mint. Come on guys remember it’s the Dems here, it’s not like they are rolling in cash or otherwise they would be buying heaps of tv ads, etc. If the Labor party donated the takings of just one of their poker machines for just one day it would likely double the Dems kitty. Good on them!

Deadmandrinking12:58 am 26 Oct 07

I-Pods? Campaigns like triple J? That’s it, I’m voting for them!

wow major prize of an old ipod shuffle.. worth about $80 these days?! now that’s a really enspiring competition there, reminds me of their policies. Anyone got some sad violin music to accompany their slow and painful death?

Wait i just had a great idea, i’ll drop my dacks and sticker their “Australian Democrats – keeping the bastards honest” slogan to my ass then bend over! a sure winner!

For the correct ACT legislative information refer:
http://www.tams.act.gov.au/live/city_rangers/footpath_signs

Insurance Requirements
A person who places a movable sign in a public place must have a current public liability insurance policy for at least $10,000,000 limit of liability, which would include any liability to the public or the Territory arising out of such a sign, its design, construction or placement.

A last-gen Shuffle? Pfft, that’s not going to inspire much effort.
