Often described as the most dreaded but effective bodyweight exercise, a burpee involves going from standing to a squat, to a push-up, back to a squat and then to a jump. Repeated, it is guaranteed to deliver a significant amount of torment but is high on the list for improving overall fitness.

The current world record for the maximum number of chest-to-floor burpees completed in one hour is 820. Mitchell’s own hiit republic studio manager Bec Bennett plans to beat that record and raise funds for Lifeline, live onsite at hiit republic Mitchell from 9 am this Saturday (26 March).

We are proud to be partnering with Lifeline Canberra, raising awareness for mental health. Hear from Lifeline Canberra CEO, Carrie-Ann Leeson, hiit republic General Manager, Matt Eikenhout and of course, Bec Bennett who will be looking to beat the current World Record for most amount of burpees done in one hour! We can't wait to see you all on Saturday 5th Feb!

Bec says the idea for the world record attempt originally sprung from her wanting to give back to an organisation that could help make a difference and raise awareness for people seeking help with their mental health.

“During lockdown last year, I realised that I had never done a charity event before, and being in the fitness industry for so long, I thought there’s so much I could do to raise funds through my love for exercise,” she explained.

“At first, the challenge was something I was just going to do by myself, and then I kind of wanted to make it more of an event about raising awareness post lockdown, which has gained a lot of support.”

Bec says the relationship between hiit republic Mitchell and Lifeline Australia was a good fit for both organisations, their similar values and goals resonated with one another.

“I don’t think mental health is highlighted enough,” Bec said.

“Everyone is facing their own struggles in some ways, but it can be challenging to speak out. Lifeline is all about helping people with their mental health, and we share a mutual passion for this event.”

During her preparation leading up to the world record burpee challenge, Bec said she was excited to attempt it and support an organisation special to her, but she understands the challenge is going to be hard and very nerve-racking.

“There’s a lot of things that come into play with burpee training,” Bec says.

“I’ve been doing burpee training two to three times a week, followed by a lot of cardio and endurance training to make sure my body is ready to work for one hour straight without stopping.”

Bec is encouraging people to head to hiit republic in Mitchell to watch her world record attempt and can get involved in doing burpees.

The event will have prizes to give away, a BBQ and coffee available on the day for a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going directly to Lifeline Australia.

“For every burpee everyone else does, Viva Leisure is going to donate one dollar back to Lifeline,” she says.

“I’m really excited and appreciative of all the support I’ve received and for this opportunity to raise awareness for such an important cause that really resonates with me and my values,” she said.

“I think it’s important that everyone is aware that we all have struggles, so we’re better off picking each other up than knocking anyone down because you never know what anyone is going through.”

If you can’t make it on the day, you can still support Lifeline Canberra by making an online donation to Burpees for Mental Health.
