Joy Burch has announced a funding round to local film makersL

More than $80,000 has been provided to nine screen-based artists through the 2014 ACT Screen Arts Fund, ACT Minister for the Arts Joy Burch said today.

“The ACT Screen Arts Fund provides opportunities for the ACT community to access funding for film and screen projects,” Ms Burch said.

“It supports a range of screen activities including short film, documentaries, feature film scripts and television.”

Well known filmmaker and former owner of Electric Shadows cinemas, Andrew Pike will receive funding to make a documentary on his family heritage and Canberra filmmaker Daniel Sanguineti will be mentored on his first feature film Me and My Mates vs the Zombie Apocalpyse.

Other projects to receive funding include Clare Young for her first feature drama script “Unruly Girls”, Humphrey James for working with a script editor on his TV series Un-Real Estate and Vanessa Gazy for her short film “Highway”.

And with thanks to MrBigEars and astrojax for continuing the flippancy, there’s surely also a role for the Skywhale – oh, the humanity!

Looking forward to the action thriller about an out of control light rail carriage – with a dirty bomb on board. Things are looking grim until the day is saved by a plucky barista, who happens to be cycling past.

was cycling past until a car came within the specified 1 metre… oops. seems a windscreen washer at the intersection will be called in for the hero’s role.

Change the barista to a handsome maverick ex-cop. Forced to quit over the mishandling of a sausage sizzle, he becomes a squeegee operator. He leaps into action, leaving a public servant’s windscreen in mid wash, and saves the day.

Another movie from another genre wouldn’t mean that it too doesn’t fall under a genre of film that is currently trending and in demand at some level. 80k while a lot of money for anyone is literally less than peanut shellings in the screen business, and when divided up across nine projects. It doesn’t indicate in any way that any of these projects will develop again, attract finance and go into production to hopefully become movies. State money for films is always a good thing if you trust the person who’s backing your story, and ticking off the red tape on a form for a living? It will probably change but its very, very hard to have even a casual career in film or television in Canberra. Four of the recipients on that list have personal and professional relationships within that office and none of the staff there have any professional credits to indicate they know a good project when presented one. I can’t see anyone there that is credited on anything you or I have seen, and if we have seen it, it was that good. Starting to sound like I should probably send them my CV, its about on par! Seriously though its an encouraging thing and definitely a good place to be where anyone can apply for such things. The funding bodies around Australia all fund who ever they want to anyway but some times a gem script leaks through and becomes a good film, albeit only once a decade. I know a cast member attached to this zombie flick, says it has great promise. Im no zombie flick fan at all but I will watch anything, if its good, its good no matter what the genre.
