Summer weather has finally arrived – well, sort of – making it the perfect time for Canberra’s original microbrewery to relaunch and take its fine German beers into the community.
Christoph Zierholz started Canberra’s first regional scale microbrewery in 2005 and now, after going through a few business phases, Zierholz Premium Brewery can be seen around Canberra’s parks on weekends delighting thirsty crowds.
“We’ve been around for quite a while but obviously the past few years have been challenging and we’ve had to make a few adjustments,” Christoph said.
“We closed our cellar door restaurant and have now got back into the market in the pop-up scene with a new logo and image.
“A bit of a refresh to remind people we are still around.”
From Friday to Sunday on any given weekend, the Zierholz pop-up bar can be found serving cold beers across a number of parks, including Telopea, Bowen, Hassett and Haigh Parks.
Besides the beer, Christoph provides lawn and table games (and the tables), as well as some cool live music vibes courtesy of local duo the Comfy Gutters, who are happy to play for beer.
There’s wine, non-alcoholic drinks and gluten-free beer also for sale, as well as food selections such as meat and cheese boards and kransky hot dogs.
“In Germany you always consume food with drink, so we cater for that as well,” Christoph laughs.
“I got into brewing because my father was reminiscing about the good old German wheat beer and that there was none to be found in this part of Australia at the time.
“I did a home brewing course at Kambah and I became quite successful at brewing on an amateur scale and ended up winning a number of competitions.
“But what started as a hobby to please my dad soon turned into a viable business.
“I watched locals embrace local wines and other produce and I thought Canberra was ready for its own brewery.
“We are a premium beer as much as a boutique craft beer these days.”
Christoph’s wife and business partner Cristina brings the hospitality expertise to the pop-up, keeping customers happy with her huge smile and beer pouring skills.
The atmosphere – as well as the beer – is simply superb.
