Simon Corbell and Andrew Barr have announced they’re asking the Federales for the “transformation” of Northbourne Avenue.

“The Northbourne Avenue transit corridor is being put forward for consideration in the 2012 Update of the National Infrastructure Priorities,” Mr Corbell said.

“One of the Government’s priorities is to provide an effective and efficient transport system that meets the needs of the community while reducing its environmental and social impacts.”

Mr Barr said that as Canberra continues to grow so too does the need to provide more sustainable ways for Canberrans to get around – and with more than 50,000 people travelling Northbourne Avenue daily, increasing with the growth of Gungahlin, Northbourne is a significant transport corridor.

“The transformation of the corridor along its length, particularly through Dickson, will see Northbourne turned into a vibrant, active urban passage with many people, businesses and retail areas reaping the benefits,” Mr Barr said.

The ACT Government has commenced the Northbourne Avenue transit corridor feasibility study which will provide the technical and economic assessments and a business case for the development of the corridor.

Yep, I’d be happy if they would just properly maintain the surface. Today I noticed that one of the potholes near the Dickson bike path crossing had grown big enough overnight to swallow my small car. Well, almost.

Be good if they fix the potholes and give it a reseal with ‘proper’ bitumen, not the loose stones like most of the roads are done in. While you are at it re-widen the lanes so trucks and buses can actually pass each other without taking off their mirrors. For a major thoroughfare and the one of the main entry/exit points to Canberra it really is a goat track.

i agree, the pot holes on the flemigton rd/ northbourn intersection are getting worse by the day.

Seriousely , how many more decades before this becomes a reality? Will any of us still be alive and kicking when this becomes functional?. Northbourne Ave was constructed with a light rail system in mind in 1965, why wait until we have 50,000 cars a day to disrupt when in the 70’s it could have been done with very little pain and with the NCDC’s cash…..

The traditional pre-election light rail promise that isnt really a promise. They sure love that Infrastructure Australia outfit.
