Holden Caulfield has sent this in:

I took this snap of the Manuka Oval light tower on my commute to work this morning.

There’s another tower going up today according to Andrew Barr.

Completion and first tests expected to take place in mid-January.

@Chop71, don’t forget the VFL still exists. It’s what the VFA became known as after affiliation with the AFL in 2000.

I really hate these pedantic riotact squabbles but if you ask the AFL, they say it is the same competition just with a different name. I know as I am a Full AFL Member. It allows them to say they have the longest continual running competition in the world. The original teams like Melbourne, Geelong, Essendon, Collingwood (and even South Melbourne) etc are more than 125 years old. As the competition consists of those same teams it remains the same competition (the clubs have never left the one governing body).

It is also how they celebrated their centenary of football in 1996, which would make the VFL/AFL competition 116 years old.

It is not like rugby league where some clubs left to form Super League and then went back to the NRL.

Invented by the Captain of a rugby school …… who would have ‘thunk’ it !!!

You’re citing the AFL homepage. That’s like Gillard siting her facebook page.

The first AFL comp held in Canberra started in 1924. Rugby League was playing local, organised challenge cups just after WWI. RMC Duntroon was playing organised Rugby from 1911 onwards.

Curious as to why you didn’t referred to the AFL, which didn’t start until 1990, and not the NRL or Super Rugby?

Sorry, only speak and read English

Alas, you’re incapable of locating the full stop key on your keyboard.

The AFL is not the VFL. Same game, yes—Australian Rules Football—but they are separate competitions. Just as the NRL is not the Country Rugby League. It’s pretty simple.

If you’re going to point out the differences between Union and League at least have the respect to refer to other codes correctly too.

No, Frustrated didn’t say anything about a comp, rather how aussie rules was played here first. Seems rugby and aussie rules were played very early here. The whole comp comment was a way to divert the arguement away from the facts that were being discussed.

Well this isn’t a RL town that some people like to believe…Cricket and Australian Rules were always here first.

As for the erection of lights at MO, you can blame Kate Carnell for converting Bruce Stadium to a rectangle shaped surface back in the late 90s.

It would have been cheaper to increase capacity and still keep the oval shape.

Aaahhhh…..bulls***. The first AFL comp held in Canberra started in 1924. Rugby League was playing local, organised challenge cups just after WWI. RMC Duntroon was playing organised Rugby from 1911 onwards.

Rubbish, and also the fact you referred to it as AFL shows ignorance anyway.

1911 saw the first recorded match of Australian Rules in Canberra between the Royal Military College and employees of the Home Affairs Department.

RL popularity also dwindled at the end of the 1930s for a while.

He said comp not single game although what a game in 1911 has to do with the current sporting persuasions of Canberrans today I have no idea.

Correction.

My point was supposed to be the number of nights the lights at Manuka Oval will be used during any given year will be few.

Holden Caulfield said :

Do we know how many nights of the year we should expect these lights to be turned on?

5, 10, 20?

Either way, it’s not going to be a relatively small number.

As noted, I think the parking issue will be the bigger problem.

Correct.

Although for Australia V WI, I will make sure I’m in no state to drive

AFL/VFL/Australian Rules = same game
Rugby/Rugby League = different game

Speaking of ignorant…….Canberra didn’t exist in 1911

I’ve always had a problem with using AFL in the place of Aussie Rules. AFL is the highest professional league/the national organisation and Aussie Rules is the game itself.

The light spill from sporting field floodlights is a bloody abomination. Surely it’s possible to design them so that they light the ground and not the sky.

Lights like these in stadiums are typically very precisely focused, each bulb covering a certain segment of the field. But there will always be some spillage of the light, short of covering the whole bloody thing.

Does a movie theatre projector light up the areas to the sides of the screen? Of course it’s possible.

No. There’s no excuse. If not liking unnecessary light pollution makes me a NIMBY then it’s a badge I wear with pride.

LDA and Manuka Oval management came to an ISCCC Committee meeting. As I recall there were concerns raised about light spillage on Canberra Ave and possible distraction by the lights of drivers. The main concern was the safety issue of parking on the Canberra Ave median strip. Telopea Park school ovals cannot be used for parking after rain because they will be ploughed up.

The possibility of better park & ride facilities was raised and we were promised a traffic report.

The effects of the lights can only be gauged once they are all on and tested for TV transmission.

The LDA has been trying to do a land swap with the Canberra Services Club so they can develop the site. If the amenity of the neighbouring apartments is adversely affected and not fixed any future developments may be difficult to market.

For all these reasons, just build a new stadium/sporting facilities at Bruce.

These lights are cutting edge- compared to the kilowatt wasters of the MCG and the Gabba, this will provide a more directed, and thus more efficient use of electricity and reduce a massive amount of spill.

Actually these lights were designed to meet building and lighting constraints. They are lower than your typical lights and are more directed at the field than typical stadium lighting.

I don’t like it. It looks like a giant fly swatter. Surely they could have made it prettier?

Well, to play sports you need to light the field at least 50m into the air (maybe more for cricket). And if you shone the lights directly at the field, then anyone at field level looking up gets the lights straight in their eyes.

Although I’m pretty sure that no one has thought about the issue before, perhaps you should contact the experts and let them see the error of their ways.

I did notice the bogong moths fluttering around the lights for a night game at the Narrabundah Ball Park a few weeks ago.

I wonder how this affects quality of the TV image and how they adjust for the flickering. Canberra Stadium must have this issue to manage.

Which fella? Barr? I can’t comment about Rugby, but implementing a long-needed improvement to Manuka Oval is strange way to bear a grudge.

He said Rugby League, not Rugby. There is a sporting and cultural difference of a significant scale

yes i saw this yesterday on my jog and kind of did a double take…i was thinking, how did i miss that everyday?? glad it’s only new 🙂 certainly stands out

Cool! Looks like a giant wok-spoon!

Awww, Manuka is all grown up, it has a sporting field that doesn’t have to shut after 5pm.

Added bonus, it sends the good burgers the inner south into paroxysms of rage that they have to put up with plebs coming in and watching night time sport.
