Hey all,

I was in belco the other day and i was shocked at the hellish nature of the roads now because they closed the road outside the front of the plaza to demolish the footbridge that went from the plaza to the interchange.

Anyway here are some picks!

by the way im totally opposed to the destruction of solid infrastructure that works in the first place.

I heard a rumour today that the new overpass will have a perspex roof. In 2018 I suppose people will be saying ‘what were you thinking’.

I don’t get it; the ugly bit as Belconnen always will be that?

At least it will be so much easier for people in the level two Myer carpark not having to dodge the mountains of people crossing through from the interchange tunnels to the mall. I can’t believe they never had a zebra crossing there.

Wasn’t pretty getting through walking with toddlers, prams and trolleys either in busy times.

It did indeed make Benjamin Way look backwards, ugly and totally wrecked the lake view, which is lovely in your car once you get past those terrible tunnels, that once were.

Thank goodness it’s gone! It was the epitomy of urban blight!

Will you concrete-haters still be cheering when the new interchange goes in and turns out to be another one of those “designed by americans without thought to the fact that Australians drive on the left” disasters, like the original Glenloch interchange?

What new interchange? There isn’t going to be one. The mall interchange that gets spoken about will be nothing more than a COUPLE of glorified bus shelters on 4 or 5 stops. Not the 16 or so dedicate platforms that were in use at the real interchange.

The view down Benjamin Way now is great without the 70’s concrete walkways. Once they finish cleaning up, you will get a clear view to the lake when approaching from the south.

I just hope when they rebuild the new on street interchange, they include more/better shelter. Looks like lots of people are currently getting wet waiting for busses in the new advertising shelters scattered around Belconnen. Come summer time, those same people will be getting nicely burned.

Will be interesting to see how they progress the extension of Cohen street… Viva la progress!

This statement intrigues me, would you care to elaborate?

My only real issue is that we appear to have lost the only actual dedicated bus-way in the territory. Next time some politician talks about bus ways I’ll be grinding my teeth 🙁

Agreed it was ugly and it needed refreshing.
BUT they just destroyed the buses up north, they will not be replacing it with a shiny new one but they have put the buses on the streets with no center you can rock up to and catch a bus from.

Another ‘brilliant’ idea from the act government….
I do hope they refurbish Woden but keep the site for a bus interchange and not a bus stop spread through Phillip and into Woden.

For clarification when i was stating “im totally opposed to the destruction of solid infrastructure that works in the first place.” i was commenting on belco having a interchange not a bus stop.

Oh well their solution for the interchange will be solved in 2015 (i think) YAY………

Yay! Flush that turd away!

I think it’s a metaphor for the ABS next door. A useless messy pile.

Considering they’ve already demolished the interchange, it was a footbridge to nowhere. I’d hardly say it works.

You will love the outcome though. Back in 1988 my Uncle described Belconnen Town Centre as a maze of ugly cement buildings, in 2008 I had to agree. But in 2018, I’ll have to disagree (except maybe for the ugly bit as Belconnen always will be that). But the changes will brighten Belconnen up quite a lot & getting from the bus to Westfield will be quite a lot easier once this work is complete.

Soon we should see work being done to extend & lower Cohen Street to Benjamin Way & then onto Eastern Valley Way.

Do you still beleive the end result will be any better. For a ‘bus’ enthusiast I would have thought you more than anyone would know better.

The end result may sure look pretty (for a year or two) and give ‘better’ access to the mall (what ever that really means), but will do SFA to help and encourage more use of buses in Belconnen. Indeed I reckon it will discourage it. I know I sure the hell wouldn’t want to change buses in Belconnen on a wet and cold winter night. It isn’t like this new mall stop will be a propper interchange, or like some of the mall interchanges they have in places like Brisbane.

When are they doing woden?!!!

The ugly cement buildings are being replaced by ugly, plastic looking back and white boxes – the DIAC HQ is horrendous. And I’m not too sure about Belconnen being ugly, either – Lake Ginn is probably the prettiest lake & environs in Canberra.

I’d say you’re in the minority on this destruction. Glad to see it go.

One of the smallest minorities in the world, the place should have been demolished 15+ years ago.

I live Belconnen and haven’t seen this yet. Thanks for sharing. I am so glad that its gone.
