Belconnen beats

Belconnen Police Station will again establish a dedicated six-person Beats patrol team over the Christmas and New Year period as part of a proactive initiative to deal with anti-social and criminal behaviour.

The initiative will run from December 10 to January 25, which will see the Beats team patrol areas such as local shopping centres, car parks and bus interchanges throughout Belconnen over the Christmas and New Year period, with its main focus on the busy Belconnen Town Centre and Westfield shopping centre.

The aim is to provide a high level of police visibility within Belconnen’s busiest retail areas over the festive season.

Last year the Belconnen-based Beats team was a resounding success with over 180 incidents attended. As a result of these incidents there were 11 arrests, nine summons issued, five search warrants executed, and one First Instance Warrant executed.

Belconnen Operations Support Sergeant Paul Hutcheson said that high visibility police patrolling of the retail areas was a proven deterrent to opportunistic criminal behavior and put police patrols in among the shoppers when activity was at its greatest.

“Over the lead-up to the Christmas-New Year and beyond that, much of our response work is around Belconnen’s large retail zones and the Emu Bank area anyway so it makes good sense to have the crews out there, actively patrolling and creating that visible police presence,” Sergeant Hutcheson said.

Anyone who sees anti-social behaviour or crimes in Belconnen and requires police attendance is urged to call ACT Policing on 131-444. If it’s a potential life-threatening emergency, then dial Triple Zero.

I’m sure if a 6-man police hip hop crew started breaking, rhyming and DJing at local shopping centres, car parks and bus interchanges over Xmas crime rates would plummet. Imagine Constable Kenny rocking the mic!

It’d certainly increase the number of justifiable homicides.

great work, pbo, but wouldn’t:

When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started makin’ trouble in the neighborhood

be more like:

when a couple brothers, they was up to no good,
started makin’ a riot ‘cross my belco hood…

I read the header as Belconnen beasts, and all I got for Christmas was a lousy pork story.

#16 is gold, as in a heavy gold chain with a diamond dollar sign.

Ahh, the joys of living in a crime & bogan free Woden 🙂

Sounds like you’ve never been near the bus interchange. The only place in Canberra where I get asked for cigarettes at least three times daily.

Sucka MCs be warned… there is no place for you in Belcompton.

I can picture this so clearly in my head (and bear in mind that i am still a bit fuzzy from last night and I have not had any coffee whatsoever and the drink machine is out of cans of Mother……)

I can totally see 4 male cops (Leader, 2IC, tall one and the fat one), one female cop (who is tough on the outside but really a softie with a heart of gold who came from the streets of Belco) and a midget cop who has a huge badge around his neck and always hypes up whatever is going down (Ah-la Flava Flav). Blue parachute pants and Cut-off shirts with the baseball style caps turned to the side to let you know they are street. But how did they start? Why were they necessary to begin with?

In west Belco I was born and raised
At the skatepark is where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ and relaxin’ all cool
And shootin’ some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started makin’ trouble in the neighborhood

And this is just one of many incidents that forced the local police to start the Beats team.

Great idea. So why only over xmas?

I’m guessing spending about $600,000 a year just to patrol Belconnen Mall is probably not good bang for buck I am guessing.

Just over half that. Yes, those that protect us are under paid.

Insurances and kit etc etc would probably make up the other 300.

But yes they are underpaid.

However, it should not matter how much it costs, there should always be, *beat cops*, or whatever you want to call them out on patrol. Physical appearance would do a lot to deter crimes. As it is I pretty much only see them at shopping centres getting lunch.

They are clearly using the word Beats with special emphasis. Is this a hip hop reference? Are they cracking down on gay hangouts? Is it a nod to their police heritage?

My guess is a combination of the three.

I think it is a subtle hint at what they intend to do to people they find are not behaving themselves.

In that case, I wish it was called the shoot patrol squad. And I also wish they’d then catch the arsehats who vandalised my car and let the tyres down and shoot ’em.

Won’t someone think of the mall cops?

I think you will find it is because they are on foot… Walking the beat.

So, a special team of six officers to do… exactly what all police do? Or is it a tacit admission that police no longer usually patrol the community with any regularity – this kind of thing is only for special occasions?

imagine the tax payer backlash if 6 police officers always hung out at Westfield.

Donut King would probably appreciate it.

what with that explosion last year and the quick response of the Beat team then.

will they include bathroom patrols?
