A 39-year-old Campbell man will face ACT Magistrate’s Court this morning (Saturday, 7 September) after being arrested in relation to an alleged assault on a young child on Thursday.

About 1.30pm police were called to the Belconnen library following a report that an unknown man was found in the corner of the library with a child.

The man left the location shortly afterwards.

Around 10.30pm on Friday, police executed a search warrant in Campbell.

At the conclusion of the warrant, the man was conveyed to the ACT Policing Watch House and charged with an act of indecency on a young child.

Police will oppose bail.

Well….duh….if assaulting a child isn’t a sure sign of having a mental illness, then I don’t know what its…

It’s not. I’ve met many child molesters who are not mentally ill, and very few who are.

They generally do it because they are bad, not mad. They do it because they don’t care about the effect on the child, just about getting their own pleasure. Or they tell themselves that it doesn’t do the child any harm (or even that the child enjoys it), sometimes because it was done to them and they think “well it didn’t do me any harm” when clearly it did.

Anyone who sexually assaults a child should at least be under strict supervision for the rest of their lives. I know some who did not apply for parole, because they wanted to roam free when released, usually by moving interstate. You don’t really need to wonder why they didn’t want to be supervised, there can be only one logical conclusion. Sexual offender registers don’t adequately control these people, they just drop out of sight until they are next caught offending.

Damn fine work by ACT Policing to get this creep off the streets so quickly.

I imagine pretty serious if police are opposing bail.

s 22 of the Bail Act, and also the presumption of bail is displaced by recent offences or breaches of bail. So between those two, can probably get a fair idea of why they’d want to oppose it.

Another person suffering a mental illness, being allowed to roam free in the community with the inevtable result that they will join all the other mentally ill people who are in gaol instead of being in care?

Yes I’m sure it’s his mental illness that caused this POS to allegedly assault a child.

Clearly the community has failed him. More Government spending on mental health services is needed.

I was rather thinking of more government spending on high walls, and less namby-pamby bollocks about how the insane should be “in the community”.

And darfalz wanted to make a joke about it.

Dirtbag, both of them.

I’m surprised Darkfalz could find the time to make that post yesterday. I’d have thought that handing out Rise Up Australia how-to-vote cards would be a big job.

Good job, the plod. Is it too much to assume that, considering the speed of apprehension, this person was, as they say, “known to the police”?

I’m also concerned that they let Darkfalz run free so that’s actually two people on the street with mental illness…
