This months public meeting will be in the form of a community discussion about the future of local centres.

Belconnen is unique amongst the Canberra town districts in having so many local centres in a state of decline. Three no longer exist and six have lost their supermarket. Come along and tell us what your local centre means to you.

Several guest speakers will open the discussion, focusing on different aspects:

Tony Senti from Combined Residents’ Action Association;
Simone Penkethman from Belconnen Community Services; and
Peter Walker of Peter Blackshaw Real Estate, with
Bruce Taggart and Julie Anne Clegg from Aranda Residents Group.

Please note the change of venue from the usual place. Belconnen Theatre, Belconnen Community Centre, corner Chandler and Swanston Streets. The Belconnen Community Centre is adjacent to the Belconnen Library.

lemme guess it will go something like this the buildings are too tall the shadows arent friendly things werent done like this back in my day bla bla bla…..buildings shouldnt be taller then 7 hands ducks banned from the lake for not being native all in favor raise ur hand

No one raised building heights at all at this forum, except in a discussion about multi storey buildings at local centres offering opportunities to add professional service offices (accountants, lawyers etc), as well as retail shopfronts.

Building heights may be a particular obsession with some people but the BCC have no position on building heights. Individual committee members have different views. Some favour buildings built as high as technically feasible, and look forward to sipping cocktails from the penthouse bar. Others prefer buildings not exceed current buildings heights.

Residents attending our forums are entitled to air their opinions and ask questions on the subject and they should be listened to. If ACTGOV changes a decision, or a developer modifies a building based on those discussions that is a good thing. That’s how consultation works.

You are welcome to attend and air your opinions.

Just remarkable…these are the same people who are up in arms against refurbishment of centres (read Hawker)…then start winging when they succeed in stopping it from going ahead…WHAT!!!!!

Simply not true. The BCC had no such position, and took no such action.

You are just making things up.

I’m looking forward to this meeting. Just a reminder that it is not being held at the Library this month, the meeting will be in the Theatre at the Belconnen Community Centre. Plenty of parking across the road as well.
