Belconnen Soccer Club in Hawker has great food, good TAB facilities but average clientele.

Sadly Canberra, let alone Belconnen is devoid of decent pubs.

Could not agree more, I live in Gungahlin and there has to be somebody out there willing to open up a tavern near the town centre where you can just stroll in wearing thongs , shorts, and your wifebeater and get an icy cold tube without worrying about dress regs/memberships etc..

Siren?

Siren isn’t a pub mate. It’s an upmarket wank joint with overpriced drinks and food.

Can you post legislation that covers requirements to be a pub?

Anywhere in this town that has decent beer on tap is over priced.

Couldnt agree more mate , except they have pretty ordinary standard beers there. If they had Coopers Pale on tap , i’d live there. I love the place , quiet, cosy , great TAB. Good place to go on your own for a few hours on a Sat , except the beer’s crap.

The Fraser tav is still going the beer is also cold and tastes great un like my other watering hole the pot belly where the tap beer if just woefull

+1 for the woeful taps at PB. Went there on Friday looking to cool my tongue with some Coopers but all I got was a warm, flat glass of crap which I was forced to discard into a potplant. “That’s Coopers Pale” I was patronisingly informed when I politely questioned the quality. So reluctantly I went straight to the soulless Duxton where the Coopers tasted like cool liquid gold. Shame, cos the PB is a cool place and much closer to my house.

This is not good, I have a mate I haven’t seen in 10 years travelling from QLD this week to meet up at PB…He has great memories of the place from the 80’s and 90’s and is very keen on a frosty pint there, he has been looking forward to strolling down memory lane..

Well it won’t be frosty and more then likely flat how ever it’s been taken over so may get a better beer system fitted but the bloke owns a couple of trendy cafe,s so I expect it will be turned in to something trendy and fancy

Hopefully the ambience of the place doesn’t change. I hate to see it turn into another jumped up cocktail bar with thumping doff doff music.

NOTHING WRONG WITH COCKTAIL BARS!!!!

You really must have endeared your fellow infantrymen while in the Army 🙂
Having said that, the Richmond Ex Servicemens Club had an excellent cocktail bar.

No it was strictly rum back then. As I get older my tastes for delicious fruity mixed spirits grows every year!

I have absolutely no problems with cocktails or cocktail bars.

However, I still hope that the Pot remains as it is.

After all, it has been going in the same format, without any real refurbishment, for over 30 years. Must be doing something right.

Cosy corners to chat in , live music, cold beer, no pokies, no bland grey melamine tables, no bland carpet. A good percentage of the patrons prob went there in the Weedon Close heydays where everyone of those pubs was packed Fri/Sat nights.

Thus destroying the last little oasis of decent pub atmosphere in Belco or anywhere near it for that matter…Aaahh the good old days, Greggs, Beggars, PB, and the Leather Bottle..I will hang onto those memories..

I wonder if there are any women on this forum who would care to comment about whether they prefer men in t-shirts or a button down shirt.

Depends on the man, the T-shirt and the context.

Some things are always bad, such as Aussie flag T-shirts, T-shirts with naked women on them, tight sports jerseys on plumpkins…Others are a real risk: badly fitted business suits, bow ties and braces. That’s the ‘funny’ barrister out for a cocktail look. Not everyone can look as good in a suit as Mr Poetix though.

White shoes are problematic. Personally I don’t like the look of men with shaved legs and no socks in canvas shoes. However, anyone wearing the following shoes would be automatically immaculate:

http://www.shoebuy.com/funtasma-pimp-02/266178 (American, so I assume it’s not a real fish.)

I wonder how those shoes would go down in a pub in Belconnen?

The retro for the sake of retro thing becomes tedious, as does a little goatee beard, or the blank hipster stare into mid-air, as if the person doesn’t care, when he obviously spent five hours finding the perfect pants and glasses on the web. Men walk an unfairly narrow line between looking unkempt and too kempt.

I do hope that clears everything up. It’s really quite easy, chaps. (Please, I am aware of gender stereotypes stalking those comments like lions. Or lionesses.)

So what you have in this day and age are venues that have put a bit of thought into their decore and look quite stylish or at least individual (Kremlin Bar), women who wear nice dresses and men in t-shirts. It’s like spot the odd one out.

farnarkler said :

Spykler, Canberran men seem to have forgotten how to dress decently. I’ve begun to wonder if young men today have trouble doing up the buttons on a shirt and that’s why they all wear t-shirts. If a bloke had tried to get into Bobby McGees with what blokes wear out on a Saturday night now, the Bobby’s bouncers would have laughed in their faces.

I’d be happy if a place opened which banned t-shirts altogether. They’re not stylish and show a lack of imagination and

I think it’s functional….people dance more these days, you can’t do that if you’re poncing about in a shirt buttoned to the top.
When did nightclubs become fashion shows anyway..I don’t remember the 1970’s, but did disco morph into creating the kind of nightclubs where people were judged on what they wore, rather than what they did?
My early memories of these kinds of places in the UK are horrendous, loads of blokes with white shirts buttoned to the top, sitting on the chairs posing or strutting about like peacocks, alcohol-fuelled punch-ups over women, women wearing silly heels so they could barely walk, bouncers in dickybows who were only happy when they could get stuck into the punters.

The only time people started having fun and actually “dancing” again was from about 1988-1990 onwards and the rave scene. Wear what you like, dance how you want to, no attitude, no drunks, no punch ups, no hospitals full of bleeding people, a ripping apart of the meatheaded bouncer job description and replacing with doormen (and women) who could actually smile….but plenty of Ecstasy i suppose.

Lighten up dude. T-shirts have been around for 50 years an definitely do not show lack of imagination. As for Bobby McGees, that joint was last open 25 years ago?

True..I remember the dress standards at Bobbys- I can’t recall ever trying to get into there or Pandoras on a Sat night with a t-shirt on. Would have been laughed at by the bouncers.
Even upstairs at the old Workers club had reasonably strict dress rules.

Ben dover you need to take a drive around Kent, Hampshire and East Sussex. There are loads of pubs in those counties that the George Harcourt looks like. Most inner city pubs look a lot worse than the Pot Belly, except for Wetherspoons. Now excuse me while I worship at my shrine to Tim Martin.

SO if we serve Speckled Hen in Belco bus depot does that make it a “proper pub”?

It’s not about atmosphere, it’s about drinks, service and eats. To claim otherwise is to be ignorant.

So an RSL is a proper pub?

I’d stick to games and comics if I were you.

I used to live directly across the road from the GT, wouldn’t suggest it… Felt like it was being run out of someone’s living room when I tried it out, but in fairness that was 10 years ago. I’d suggest Pot Belly which is stumbling distance from GT.

And how is the Kingo not a pub?? It’s even got a hotel above it run by the pub!

+1

If atmosphere isn’t important, then drink and eat at home. The drinks will be cheaper, you have full control over the service, and can eat whatever you like.

A bit of column A and a bit of column B I think. The George is a decent pub with decent food and good beer.
The whole place is pastiche but then it ‘fits the vernacular of the streetscape’ as our planner friends would say. It’s not the worst building at Gold Creek by a long shot. The container load of jimcrackery hanging off the wall and the ceiling could be thrown in a skip without any effect, good or bad IMHO.

Used to have a quaint feel to it 20 years ago, but now sadly, you have to ‘reserve’ a table, which gives it more of a restaurant feel than a drop- by-for- a- quick- lager type of place.

George is great bro.
Plenty of drinking room outside on a warm evening.

The George is a Disneyfied imitation of a pub. It’s a pub designed by someone who has had a pub described to him by someone who visited Eng;land as young boy, went into a pub, but was too young to understand or perceive what the pace was all about.

Wank wank.

As far as I know, George is the only place in canberra with speckled hen on tap?

It’s not about atmosphere, it’s about drinks, service and eats. To claim otherwise is to be ignorant.

Debacle has speckled hen, and budvar, on tap!

The Basement is worth a visit. Great live music, several pool tables and pinball machines – and no pokies. Its right opposite the bus yards, so no drinking and driving is required. I also like the Pot Belly.

There are no pubs in Belconnen. In fact their are only bars in this city, no pubs at all in Canberra.

Why don’t you just go inside and check them out??? Write your own review.

Yeah, weird question. You clearly know where they are so why not just go in and see for yourself?

The Pot Belly has a great pinball machine 🙂

Ginninderra Tavern should have a TAB . I don’t bet but seen races on tv there. Kaleen Tavern, There is also a little tavern at the 1/2 way shops in Kaleen.

There used to be more Taverns in Belco but the Labour party shut them all down to force patrons to the Labour clubs to boost Labour revenue
