Belconnen unit ablaze

ACT Fire & Rescue is on the scene of an apartment fire in College Street Belconnen.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire within the property then extinguish it.

There was no one inside when fire crews arrived on scene.

The unit has sustained substantial damage.

The cause will be investigated.

UPDATE 03/03/12 12:06: And the police have had this to say:

ACT Policing is investigating a suspicious fire at a unit in Belconnen last night (Friday, March 2).

Police were called to the Osborne Place apartment block around 7pm and evacuated the complex while ACT Fire and Rescue extinguished the fire inside one unit. Damage was estimated to be in excess of $100,000.

No-one was inside the unit at the time of the incident. Several people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene but none were conveyed to hospital.

After the fire was extinguished, the investigation was handed over to police. AFP Forensic Services will conduct an examination of the crime scene today (Saturday, March 3).
