Trivia fans, dig out the neon leg warmers, channel some Ferris Bueller and flex your grey matter with some Sporcles because the Belconnen Community Services’ (BCS) 80s themed trivia night is days away.

The winning team from 2018 fully embraced last years’ ‘spooky’ theme, so BCS has thrown down a challenge to retain their title.

This is the 3rd trivia night BCS has held to raise funds for the 10/10 project.

10/10 provides free yard and garden clean-up to 10 houses for 10 hours in the 10th month of the year.

Program manager Graham McKerchar’s concept of 10/10 was launched in 2012. BCS provides multiple gardening services within the community under the Commonwealth Homes Support Programs banner, but Graham targeted a specific need with 10/10.

10/10 prioritises people aged over 65 who could no longer access their overgrown backyards. It has extended to assist families at risk of eviction because of the state of their yard.

Households with mobility issues or children who cannot access their backyard are also eligible for some TLC from 10/10 volunteers.

The Department of Housing works alongside BCS in its 10/10 project.

Those 10 hours involve hard work, but the positive vibe among the 10 clearing teams is contagious. The joy and appreciation expressed by the recipients of a 10/10 makeover warms their hearts.

Making a backyard beautiful again.

Nicole Warren from BCS remembers an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. The two had enjoyed gardening throughout their marriage, but now he was frail. Rampant weeds and grass had a chokehold on the broad bean patch he had nurtured with his wife.

BCS visited to look at his yard and chat about how he wanted to use the 10 hours. As he talked about what he needed, he made sure to point out the sentimental value of the yard.

“Be careful,” he advised the volunteers. “I have broad beans under this grass.”

When the 10/10 team had finished, the broad bean patch had been reclaimed as part of the clean-up.

BCS team members get their hands dirty for the cause, as do many Department of Housing volunteers, but Nicole says they could always use more hands. BCS requires a kitchen crew to cook breakfast and lunch for all the volunteers, as well as robust and enthusiastic volunteers to help with clearing backyards.

If you’d like to get involved, fill out the volunteer form on the BCS website. Even a few hours can make a big difference.

You can also help by organising a trivia table to battle it out against other teams on the trivia night.

Proceeds go to this amazing community project. Gather a table together and book now.

Bookings are made through the BCS reception, so email bcs@bcsact.com.au or call 02 6264 0200. Find out more at the BCS website.
