Do you like ice cream? Stupid question, everyone likes ice cream.

The much beloved Ben and Jerry’s ice cream brand is launching in Canberra and will soon be available from supermarkets and ready to be put directly into your mouth hole. Rejoice!

The Ben & Jerry’s legendairy range is based on the original recipes of ethical ice cream gurus and
company founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. Armed with a $5 correspondence course in ice
cream making, the longstanding friends opened their very first Scoop Shop in an old gas station in
Burlington, Vermont back in ‘78. Whilst they occasionally disagreed on the size of the chunks going
into the ice cream, one thing they did agree on was having fun. As Jerry put it, “ If it’s not fun,
why do it?”

Why indeed Jerry.

Most 7-elevens have been selling B&J’s for some time now..

Expensive and overly sweet ice cream… Pass !

Wait! I have to apologize – they had Clusterfluff (oh the irony) not Peanut Brittle!

That’s all good thanks anyway. I know of around 10 places at least in Canberra that sell Ben and Jerry’s but no one has big tubs of Peanut Brittle.

Clusterfluff is my second favourite though.

Why on earth would you put wheat products into a premium ice cream? One of the ingredients in the maple variety was Wheat Flour. There’s no good reason for that.

(Last year I found I’m intolerant to wheat products including wheat-derived glucose, which rules out almost all of the cheap supermarket ice creams except for 3 varietites of Unilever’s Streets Magnums, as well as Splits and the Aldi imitation of Splits. Everything else uses Glucose Syrup (from wheat) because it means they get to not put the word Sugar in the ingredients list. It may also be cheaper.)

I haven’t had a good batch come out of my DIY machine yet either. It’s infuriating that even B&J’s will add cheap and nasty ingredients too.

It will never be as good as Maggie Beer’s Burnt Fig, Honeycomb and Caramel Ice Cream, in my opinion, the standard by which all ‘gourmet’ ice-cream should be judged.

Also phenomenally expensive, but we’ll worth it for the two or three times a year I have it.

Oh yeah!! Simply the best ice cream ever.

If anyone knows of anywhere in Canberra to get large tubs of the Peanut Brittle please let me know.

Ben and Jerry’s also sell a combination locking device that keeps people out of your Ice Cream:

Disposable: I have thus far only noted two locations selling Ben and Jerry’s. One is the SPAR at Ngunnawal shops (the ones off of Wanganeen/Jabbanugga Ave’s) and the other is the Friendly Grocer at Forde shops.

While they don’t have particularly large tubs, I have purchased the Peanut Brittle from Forde.

Sadly for my wife, and fortuitously for me, listed in the ingredients was cocca (she is allergic, and had identified the flavor as a prospective cocoa free ice cream she could have).

It was a tub of magnificence.

I remember buying some Ben and Jerry’s stuff from a servo in Port Macquarie in January last year. My reaction was “meh, just another ice cream”. Inferior to, say, Homer Hudson’s Hoboken Crunch.

Snarky – flame out will be less visible due to not being a franchised shopfront.

Woolworths Select packaging is getting more deceptive – I prefered it when their house brand “home brand” could be identified by its white packaging, red stripe and black lettering…

At that price investment in an ice cream maker would be paid back very quickly, given that you can make probably over a litre in one hit in an ice cream maker in a short 25 minutes. That gives you an idea of what is actually in the product and what needs to be done to create it. And your home made stuff will not have any of the additives in it that commercial organisations use to make it soft and have just the right feel in your mouth.

It’s more expensive than the Maggie Beer stuff which I now refuse to buy also. I tried her Vanilla (and something else) ice cream and thought it was very ordinary for the cost.

You seem to have forgotten the ‘Advertising Feature’ tagline for this article…

no payment received. it’s just something readers are interested in

“$15 for 475ml tub”(!) – Adobe ice cream?

It’s nice enough ice cream, but the price is way out of line. I wonder if this’ll end up like Krispy Kreme? Back when KK had only a Sydney outlet everyone wanted them and they seemed almost exotic, even though the taste really is nothing to shout about. Then they opened an outlet in Woden and lasted, what – maybe a year and a half? before shuttering.

I know Ben and Jerry’s will “be in supermarkets” but wonder how long it’ll last there at those prices before it gets shunted off for a very close copy “Woolworths Select” version at two thirds the price?

While staying in Manhatten some years back, I discovered a corner store near my digs that was flogging off their freezer of Ben and Jerry’s for $1 a pop. So I loaded up and took them home. Visited that corner store several times over the week, I think I tried every flavour and some several times. Favourites were the Cherry Garcia and the Heath Bar Crunch.

(I think the freezer had Issues and was being de-commissioned).

Oddly enough, when living down the road from their actual factory, I didn’t have any.

Saw this in a freezer at Tuggers over weekend. Looks nice, but geez it’s expensive. $15 for 475ml tub….
