Best all round beach down the coast?

It’s gonna be 20 degrees down near Bateman’s Bay on the weekend and we are heading down to celebrate the warmth. With two young school age kids in tow there is a tough decision to make as to which beach will be best for us.

Something close to BB as it is a day trip from Canberra, but with options, like lunch nearby, swings etc, but a great beach too with sand AND rock pools (I know, I know, I can hear you say, “You want EVERYTHING).

So what do yous reckon? Which beach?

So Rosebud, what’s the verdict on Tomakin?

Has anyone else realised that Batemans Bay and its associated beaches are crap? I was very disappointed on my first visit to Canberra’s summer playground.

Everything between BB & Casey’s is poop. You didn’t go far enough South, chump.

For future reference – Maloney’s Beach (just a few mins north of Bateman’s Bay, on the north side of the head) is a fantastic beach for young families. Shallow waters, sheltered surf (small waves, ’cause they break on the head), rock pools nearby, dog friendly, nice fine sand (for sand castles/sculpting) and 1000s of hermit crabs… The traditional corner store/takeaway a few hundred meters away is pretty good too… We used to get a house down there in Summer, but the owner sold it

I have NEVER seen Maloney’s crowded…

You didn’t mention the ample parking 30 metres from the waters edge…

Out of interest, how far does ‘assoiated beaches’ extend? Do you consider batehaven, catalina, long beach, kioloa, morouya or mollymook to be ‘associated beaches’? If so, then how far towards queensland do you feel one has to travel to find a non-crap beach? Or do you think of ‘batemans bay’ as the shopping mall, and never ventured out the town?

Jethro, only newbies go to Batemans Bay

no, hadn’t. broulee, for instance, is a great beach – surf, sheltered safe swimming, island to explore, rock pools, snorkelling next door, dog-friendly ish, fabulous muffin shop nearby. what else you want?

Cheers hive mind! Drum roll please…..We’re going to Tomakin! Probably no kayaking though. Maybe a longer visit is in order to do that!

Good, your not being there will just leave more room for the rest of us:) Beaches within BB itself can be ordinary but then again, if you drive just 15 minutes further on you can get to Broulee which on a great day will rival any beach, anywhere. Even on an ordinary day,it’s great. Great waves, snorkeling, the occasional dolphin pod and even the rare whale. It’s a short walk to the shops for fish and chips or a few beers and also has great fishing. Not sure what else you’re looking for in a beach but does just fine.

Sorry to double post: Should have read “first and last visit”.

Greenpatch, Jarvis Bay. Great camp site with hot showers, a pretty small beach for the kids, and a huge “long walks” beach for surfing, fishing, and the proverbial long walks. Bring a canoe and paddle along the river that begins up at the far end of the long beach – it’s an adventure!

Tomakin. Has beaches, a river and plenty of rocks to explore. There’s a club and a milk bar for food and drink. Cafe and kayak hire on the Broulee side of the river. Beautiful place.

It’s all nice. Have a great time, but watch out for dangerous surf.
