If you’ve ever needed a gas fitting, you know how important choosing the right company is for your safety. Gas is highly flammable and you don’t want it leaking in or around your home.

Working with gas and gas fittings is dangerous which is why you need a skilled, experienced, licensed, and competent gas fitter on board to help with service, maintenance, repair or a new installation.

Great gas fitters are highly trained and skilled at working with your gas appliances and systems, whether that’s your cook-tops, stoves, gas cookers, water boilers or BBQs. They’re licensed and specialise in working with gas lines and appliances, to protect you and your property.

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing a gas fitter, and share where to find the best in Canberra.

What makes a great gas fitter?

Choosing a fully qualified and experienced gas fitter can provide you with peace of mind. Safety is their priority.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing a gas fitter.

  • Trained, licensed and experienced. The best gas fitters have been formally trained. They’re licensed and have years of experience. They’re trained on how to correctly and safely install gas appliances for long-term use and can detect and remedy any faults. Never use a gas fitter who doesn’t have a current license with a professional body.
  • Safety-conscious. Defective or improperly installed gas fittings can put you, your family, and your home at risk. Top-quality gas fitters are incredibly safety conscious and will go above and beyond to ensure everything is working as it should be.
  • Well-priced. Price is always an important factor to consider. While competitive pricing is always a selling point, if someone quotes a rock-bottom price it could be that it’s too good to be true.
  • Reliable. The best tradespeople, including gas fitters, always show up on time and work promptly. They never keep you waiting around.
  • Insured. Gas isn’t something to muck around with. It can be dangerous. Make sure your gas fitter is properly insured to take care of any damage or injury that could happen in and around your property.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the best gas fitter?

First and foremost, your gas fitter should be licensed by a professional body, insured and properly trained. They should also be experienced in the problem you need solved, such as installing gas pipes, converting BBQs to natural gas, maintaining gas appliances, installing new gas appliances or resting and repairing leaks. Do your homework by looking at their website for qualifications and experience. Also be proactive and ask them direct about certification and experience.

Does price matter when choosing the best gas fitter?

The saying "you only get what you pay for" applies to gas fitters as it does any other trade. If someone is quoting a price that seems too good to be true, it's because it probably is. Getting a few quotes is wise and will give you knowledge on what gas fitters charge. If you come across a low price, ask the gas fitter why they are so cheap.

Can I get my plumber to provide gasfitting services?

Some qualified, licensed plumbers can offer gasfitting services but they must be qualified to do so. It's best to ask your plumber if they can provide such services. If they can't, it's best to select a certified gas fitter.

Hi grunge_hippy,

One of my mate recently bought a property in Belconnen and got a bit of it renovation done. Just make sure who ever you get is a licensed one.

He got quotes from few mob before he finalized with http://capitalgasworks.com.au/

I am not sure how much they charged but one aspect i personally appreciated was that they took care of the old cook top and hopefully did the right thing.

PS:- gas cooking is awesome if you love cooking, there are few dishes which no matter what you do will never turn out well with proper temperature control.
My 2 cents.

which is nice… for you. but i have already bought the stove, we have gas to the house, we just need it in the kitchen.

I’ve called those numbers people have recommended, left a message with one, the other didn’t even answer his phone.

next!!

Think I’ll put the $400 towards an induction electric cooktop instead…

I’ve just done that, and am very happy. A few things steered me away from gas, the first was the cost of installation to where I needed it, the fact that the cooktop would be the only gas appliance I had and the final nail in the coffin was a chef friend recommending induction, and telling me he was about to install it in his new kitchen.

Had it for about 6 weeks now, and am very happy.

Not a bad move if you’re not too interetested in a decent cook top. Copper’s expensive, So at 10-bucks a metre I douubt he’e gouging you (too much).

I’m looking to renovate my kichen and go over to a gas cooktop, so a week ago I rang a listing in the Yellow Pages. Cost would be $250 for his callout/hookup plus $10/m for piping. As my piping run would be about 15m from the cooktop to the ducted heater gas line, that’s $400 – assuming it was all good to go for him to do it in one callout (also needs to have splachback tiles removed and a hole in the plasterboard to drill through the noggin – not my head).

Think I’ll put the $400 towards an induction electric cooktop instead…

Try Spencer and Sons plumbing – they are good with fitting gas things, not just unblocking loos.

Peewee Slasher1:17 pm 10 Aug 09

Gungahlin Al. No, I wasn’t being sarcastic. Apologies to all. Try saying it with a silly English voice.

My advice is however, very precise. Certificates must be issued and not all gasfitters remember to do so, and it falls upon the consumer to ride them hard.

I know many gasfitters but am not in a position to recommend any. Nuff said.

good point…we have a rangehood to put in as well, so a good sparky is needed too!

Casper Electrics quoted me roughly $2000 for major electrical overhaul to 3 phase/kitchen revamp/new circuit board to accommodate increased usage from new induction stove/appliances etc for work done. When the bill turned up after a significant period for $300 less (yes, LESS) than quoted he explained that he didnt need to charge us for that component (long boring story). He could have easily done unnecessary work and billed me for it and I would have been none the wiser. He turned up when he said he would. He explained the process in terms that weren’t patronising or dismissive simply because he had to deal with a female customer. He fixed things that he didnt need to fix (when I changed my mind) and didnt charge extra. All round a decent, pleasant guy to deal with.

Gas! Ooohhh, very dangerous.

The gasfitter has to give you a gasfitting certificate of compliance for any gas work he does. You can also request a gas inspection by government upon completion of the work on 6205 0517.

Not sure if this is meant to be sarcastic…?

I witnessed a house explode (yes the whole house) due to a gas leak. Felt like it went close to blowing the windows out where I was almost 1km away. By the time we called 000 and got to the house, there was little left of the 4 walls surrounding a whopping great roman candle, and we could only focus on helping the firies find the buried hydrants and save the neighbouring houses. Turned out to be just the gas in the car parked under the house.
Even more bizarre was that the sole occupant somehow managed to get out and past us (must have been through bush in the back) and walked about 4kms into town, then died falling off a bridge…

grunge_hippy11:39 am 10 Aug 09

does anyone who has done this give a rough guess how much it all costs?

Have justed checked our fridge door also, and Evan from Drips & Drains (0418 480 324) was excellent when he installed our gas stove (also bought from Harvey Norman)a couple of years ago.

Would you believe Evan phoned to say he would be 10 mins late for his scheduled appointment with us – what tradie does that?? Top stuff!

grunge_hippy4:43 pm 09 Aug 09

awesome CK. thanks!

Clown Killer4:42 pm 09 Aug 09

we bought it from harvey norman… i doubt they can help

Whatever you do, do not use the people Harvey Norman recommend. We bought an air-conditioner from them a coupleof years ago and got it installed by the people they recommended -an outfit called “The Climate Doctor” – without doubt the least competent bunch of meat-puppets I’ve ever had the displeasure of doing business with.

The good news is, that I’ve been prompted to check the fridge door and I’ve found the magnet for the gas-fitter that I am more than happy to recommend: MK 1 Gas Services. Mark’s number is 02 62477271 or 0411555256.

grunge_hippy4:33 pm 09 Aug 09

if you’re a gas fitter, then yes!!!!

Clown: we bought it from harvey norman… i doubt they can help!!

Perhaps I could help?

Clown Killer2:21 pm 09 Aug 09

I’m guessing that given the nature of gas-fitting the bad ones get blown away pretty quickly!

If you’re not doing a full kitchen rennovation it might pay to consult the people where you bought your oven etc. They may have people that they are prepared to recommend.

Gungahlin Al11:36 am 09 Aug 09

Make sure you put in an externally flued hood as well – indoor air pollution from gas appliances is a serious health issue.
