Best Gnocchi in Canberra?

I’m searching for the best gnocchi in Canberra and would love to know where it might be.

I’m tired of having sub par gnocchi that’s either rock hard in the centre or sticks to your mouth like warm playdough.

We had some excellent gnocchi from Bellucis in Phillip, is there anywhere else we should try? Of course value for money is a must and a takeaway option would be an added bonus.

The lemon ricotta gnocchi at Ellacure has a very nice texture… like little pillows of air

I had this just the other day. It was amazing! just like fluffy clouds in my mouth!

Marinetti has recently reopened in O’Connor. It has 3 gnocchi dishes on the menu, 2 panfried and one not. All made from scratch and delicious. Super light and fluffy. Love the home made bread too.

As suggested above you can make your own. The secret to a good Gnocchi is in the potatoes you use. Buy Pink Eye potatoes.

Thanks for that tip! I’ve often had disasters with various dishes because of using the wrong type of potato.

Where in Canberra can you buy Pink Eye potatoes though? Have never seen them at Belco markets. Is there an easy to obtain alternative? Desiree?

My only attempt at gnocchi was a disaster, but I refuse to quit!

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! Will be trying out these places in the near future and will give making some at home a go too!

Just spat water out of my mouth on seeing Babars in a ‘best of something’ in Canberra thread

+ 1 to this sentiment. last time i was, and will ever be, in babars, my meal didn’t come at all despite asking the waiter 3-4 times if it was far away after close to an hour – when the woman in the group sitting opposite me found a pubic hair in her risotto, i ended up just cancelling my own meal!!!

I agree with the Italian & Sons recommendation, if you’re happy to dine in ‘shifts’, and pay a $150 deposit to secure your table. But Bicicletta in the New Acton precinct (it’s the restaurant of the Diamant Hotel, in the same building as Parlour Wine Room) also does great gnocchi, without any of that pretension – the gnocchi is fantastic, as are all the other pastas and pizzas I”ve tried there. Just give the dessert menu a miss, they don’t do this course at all well.

Another vote for Delissio, Curtin (except that you have to go more than once, because it is a bit “heavy” to have their mains gnocchi and then their must-try dessert gnocchi).

La Dolce Vita in Kingston does a delicious, hefty serving of gnocci.

I had no problems with Bella Vista gnocchi either — but couldn’t quite eat it all. They’ll do it take away if you ask them nicely.

And I have been meaning to try my hand at this for many successive weekends, but it’s still on the to-do list: http://www.citrusandcandy.com/2009/05/daring-cooks-challenge-lime-and-black.html

my place, however, we have gone off the potato gnocchi (way too stodgy), but a big fan of ricotta gnocchi, much lighter, easier to make

tossolini’s in civic has a good gnocchi gorgonzola. as for outstanding, i dream of coming across a fabulous panfried gnocchi in canberra. alas none yet…

Jebus, there must be a dearth of options if La Porchetta and the Civic Babar are getting recommendations.

Or is it just something that’s too difficult for even the most culinarily challenged to stuff up?

Learn to make it yourself (it is quite easy) and you’ll never eat gnocchi out again. It’s also worth finding out whether it’s made on the premises or is frozen? Some places (such as The Fat Goanna) make meals from scratch.

+1 for the gnocchi with veal raghu at Italian and Sons – very nice.

The pumpkin gnocchi at Babar’s in civic is excellent.

Delissioso, Curtin.

I had a great gnocchi at Italian and Sons in Braddon, served with a simple veal ragu. Seldom do restaurants cook it properly (let alone make their own). I wouldn’t bother with takeaway gnocchi as it’d probably be pretty stodgy by the time you got home. Try making it yourself- it’s easy and fun!

I am quite partial to the Gnocchi at La Porchetta in Tuggeranong… especially in the form of Pollo e Funghi… not sure if they do takeaway, but if anyone does – they will…
