The best hair salons in Canberra

hair salon Canberra

A stylish hair cut that suits your face, colouring, personality and lifestyle is a major boost to your confidence.

If you’ve ever been to a hair salon that doesn’t cut it, you’ll understand the importance of choosing a skilled and experienced stylist who will make you look amazing. But with so many hair salons in Canberra, how do you know which one to choose?

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing a hair salon, and share where to find the best in Canberra

What makes a great hair salon?

Choosing the right hair salon will get you the best cut and colour and take the stress out of worrying about how you’ll look. The stylists at the best hair salons will advise you on the best shape and colour for your hair.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing a hair salon.

  • Experience. Great hair salons have fully trained and experienced stylists who know how to achieve a look that flatters your features. They also have strong support staff who keep the salon running smoothly.
  • Reputation. One way to gauge the quality of a salon is to read their website to see what credentials they hold, whether they’ve won awards and how long they’ve been in business. You can also check out reviews online.
  • Price. You’ll want to choose a hair salon that suits your budget and gives you value-for-money.
  • Technique. The best hair salons are skilled at cutting, colouring and styling, so you don’t have to head to multiple places to look fabulous.
  • Hygiene. You’ll want a salon with excellent hygiene practices – one that is neat, tidy and super clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get my hair cut and coloured?
The cost varies depending on factors like the type of hair you have, the style you're after and what services you want. With colouring, for example, adding foils to your hair will increase the cost. Check to see if your salon offers a free consultation session and ask for a specific quote then.
How do I determine what hairstyle is best for my face shape?
Stylists at quality salons are trained to help you determine the best hairstyle for your face shape. They’ll also consider other factors like the texture of your hair, your personality and your lifestyle.
Which colour will work best for me?
Choosing colour is an art in and of itself and a quality colourist will talk you through options based on factors like your eye colour, skin tone and even the best colour for the season.
What happens if I’m not happy with my cut and colour?
Check the salon’s policy before you visit the salon to see what will happen if you’re not happy with the end result. If the salon did exactly what you asked for, but you don’t like what you see, you may not get a full refund. If the salon didn’t do what they agreed to, you can push for a full refund or ask if the salon will fix your hair for free.
Can I just take a photo from a magazine in and ask for that look?
You can take a photo in, but a quality stylist will give you advice on whether it’s realistic to achieve that look. Sometimes clients (who aren’t experts in cutting and colouring) don’t understand that a certain cut and colour – even though they love it – might not work for their type of hair or the shape of their face.

Monet at Southlands. Matched my colour perfectly and made a few simple but clever changes to my style that updated my look. I’ve been back twice since and still feel that I get excellent service.

Emma and the girls at Antique Salon – soon to be at the Next Gen in Lyneham, they also have a salon at Bonner – The Hairdresser and the Barber.
Every time you visit these guys, you leave feeling fantastic, the products they use are great, they really listen to what you want and the service is fantastic. Wouldn’t go anywhere else!

Visited the beautician at Canberra Hair and Beauty in Belconnen last week and was so impressed that today I strayed from my normal hairdresser (who was on other side of town, had to book weeks in advance, $$$ & he was sometimes an artiste that made me wait). I’m normally happy to pay handsomely for an excellent wash, cut and blow dry for my hard to control hair, but today the cost (for me) was very reasonable and the cut excellent. There is free parking at the door, I had a complementary plunger coffee, the aircon was lovely and my young hairdresser (who had great hair herself – that always reassures me) was so quick. They are hard to find, their entry is off the carpark behind Kingsley’s Chicken in Belco, I think the address is Rae Street.

Innovative wigs in Braddon are amazing- I have been going to them for the past 2 years and it is always a great experience there. I recently tried their wigs too you know with all the Kylie Jenner craze going around. They were great. Does anybody know any other wig places in Canberra?

If, like me, your normal salon makes a dreadful mistake and accidentally dyes your hair wicked witch black, there is still hope! I have very long, thick, frizzy, unruly hair and four separate high-end Civic colour specialist salons told me there was nothing I could do without risking a huge reddish Afro if I tried to return it to its normal brown. Then I decided to try one more option and stopped in at Sing Song in Westfields Woden two days ago and they completely restored it to its healthy, brown best with a top notch balayage for a flat $200. So, at the risk of losing my access to instant appointments due to higher customer volume, I must offer the highest praise for and recommend Sing Song in Woden.

Naz at TGs Fyshwick is a superstar colourist! Has been fixing my colour gradually after a stuff up at another salon this time last year.

Danny from Hair by Danny & Jess in Kingston gets my vote.

Madam Cholet Madam Cholet 9:45 pm 12 Dec 16

Smitten closed and moved to Kingston and is now called something like ‘A brace of Hares’.

My vote goes to Amanda at Simona in Torrens. One of the few I’ve come across who cat cut curly hair. They aren’t open at the weekend or Mondays, but are open late every other day which is miles better than any other hairdresser which gets booked up at the weekends only. They also don’t push products at you.

Peta at Cut it Long in Theodore – by far the best in Canberra!

hannahmc hannahmc 10:39 pm 12 Dec 16

Peta at Cut It Long is amazing. I have a tempremental scalp and it has caused much anxiety (and discrimination) in the past. She has made me feel at ease and has helped find products that I dont react to and has given much guidance.
It has taken me a long time to find someone I can trust and isnt just there to do a job. She genuinely cares about the end result

charizard1984 charizard1984 11:02 pm 12 Dec 16

No one knows hair like Peta from Cut It Long. She’s so much fun to be around and always make sure you walk out looking and feeling like a rockstar.
