hair salon Canberra

A stylish hair cut that suits your face, colouring, personality and lifestyle is a major boost to your confidence.

If you’ve ever been to a hair salon that doesn’t cut it, you’ll understand the importance of choosing a skilled and experienced stylist who will make you look amazing. But with so many hair salons in Canberra, how do you know which one to choose?

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing a hair salon, and share where to find the best in Canberra

What makes a great hair salon?

Choosing the right hair salon will get you the best cut and colour and take the stress out of worrying about how you’ll look. The stylists at the best hair salons will advise you on the best shape and colour for your hair.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing a hair salon.

  • Experience. Great hair salons have fully trained and experienced stylists who know how to achieve a look that flatters your features. They also have strong support staff who keep the salon running smoothly.
  • Reputation. One way to gauge the quality of a salon is to read their website to see what credentials they hold, whether they’ve won awards and how long they’ve been in business. You can also check out reviews online.
  • Price. You’ll want to choose a hair salon that suits your budget and gives you value-for-money.
  • Technique. The best hair salons are skilled at cutting, colouring and styling, so you don’t have to head to multiple places to look fabulous.
  • Hygiene. You’ll want a salon with excellent hygiene practices – one that is neat, tidy and super clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get my hair cut and coloured?
The cost varies depending on factors like the type of hair you have, the style you're after and what services you want. With colouring, for example, adding foils to your hair will increase the cost. Check to see if your salon offers a free consultation session and ask for a specific quote then.
How do I determine what hairstyle is best for my face shape?
Stylists at quality salons are trained to help you determine the best hairstyle for your face shape. They’ll also consider other factors like the texture of your hair, your personality and your lifestyle.
Which colour will work best for me?
Choosing colour is an art in and of itself and a quality colourist will talk you through options based on factors like your eye colour, skin tone and even the best colour for the season.
What happens if I’m not happy with my cut and colour?
Check the salon’s policy before you visit the salon to see what will happen if you’re not happy with the end result. If the salon did exactly what you asked for, but you don’t like what you see, you may not get a full refund. If the salon didn’t do what they agreed to, you can push for a full refund or ask if the salon will fix your hair for free.
Can I just take a photo from a magazine in and ask for that look?
You can take a photo in, but a quality stylist will give you advice on whether it’s realistic to achieve that look. Sometimes clients (who aren’t experts in cutting and colouring) don’t understand that a certain cut and colour – even though they love it – might not work for their type of hair or the shape of their face.

Peta at Cut It Long is by far Canberras best hairdresser. I’ve been to 5 of the salons on the list above and none compare to Peta. Her knowledge and passion for hair is amazing, I won’t go anywhere else!

One for the guys! I have to give a shout out to my dear friends – Darren Jones, who many will know from The Hairdressing, and Nicolle Keyes, marketing guru for FashFest this year – who have just realised a long-held dream in opening up their new retro-styled barbershop.

Classic, simple cuts, trims and shaves with old-fashioned customer service – and you can have a beer! #winning

Well, we seem to have a lot of really good hairdressers/stylists in Canberra. Aren’t we lucky?
I want to share my stylist in the list. Jenni at Bond Hair Religion in Kingston is outstanding. Not only does she do great things with my double crown & double cowlic & keep it interesting, her salon also does exciting things with my young adult daughter.
Also, she is very environmentally aware, recycling something like 98-99% of everything that goes through her salon, including chemicals. She raises money for survivers of child abuse by going things like walk Kakoda & has this year set up her own charity I think.
As if this were not enough, she has taken out so many professional awards I can’t count, the latest being recieved in Darwin for trainer of the year or something. She’s stunning on all fronts.

The Gungahlin barber Dylan Limon was amazing when cutting my hair. Highly recommend this gentleman for any style of haircut. From the male before me reviving a fade to my long hair. He tends to all customers needs with incredible precision. Amazing.

Peta from Cut It Long. Her knowledge on hair is extraordinary! She has managed my hair throughout several pregnancies, kept it healthy and looking natural (while hiding my greys)! She ensures her knowledge and training is current of products and moving trends within the industry. She’s amazing! She also keeps my hubby looking fab with men’s cuts and beard trims!

Cut It Long!!! I’ve tried alot of hairdressers in the past 20yrs of getting my hair dyed & no one has come close to having skills like Peta. She’d better never retire because I would have to leave Canberra to find a hairdresser who can do what she does. Absolutely a most talented artist with hair & always keeping studied up with all new hair product technology. Definitely Peta at Cut It Long.

My mother cuts my hair. She doesn’t charge. She does as well as any hair dresser I have been to.

I haven’t been to a hairdresser in maybe twenty years. Are women still charged more than men to have their hair cut?

I followed recommendations here and found Wayne Robinson – Now at Fabric at kingston btw…. I went today and am seriously so happy with my haircut. I have curly hair & avoid haircuts because I’m usually disappointed – curly hair is tricky! I totally agree with other comments – Wayne really listens, is very attentive and clearly understands curly hair issues. He took extra time to blow dry my hair really nicely as well (not easy to get right!). 10 out of 10 and big thumbs up for Wayne!

Off London is hands down, no debate, THE most pleasing hair experience!
So so happy I was able to go in today, thank you. Thankyou!

No need to ask for any Stylist in particular as you can be sure, and I say this after having had my hair done here for quite a few years now, that whomever you get will be skilled at their craft.
So saying however, if I book far enough in advance, Paul may be available to do the cutting and what a treat that is! You know when you just can’t quite get the fringe or whatever right?? He can.
And Adriana coloured my hair today, amazing! No words, just love it! So lucky and so grateful to all you guys that you are making it through this Pandemic so far ?and you’re still there for us making us shine ? Thankyou

I’m desperately seeking a decent hairdresser! I’ve had a few horrible experiences and am now so scared to go somewhere new!

My most recent experience was at Hair+Her in Gungahlin. The salon itself was beautiful but that’s where it ends.

The girl doing my hair berated me for having damaged hair and made me feel like I was an idiot. I’ve gone black to blonde so yes, I am expecting there to be some degree of damage, but I don’t expect to be spoken down to about it – that’s why I go to a professional so I don’t ruin my hair completely.

She refused to cover my greys on my regrowth and do foils instead told me she would put a treatment on my hair and tone everything down so it wasn’t so blocky. I sat for ages and listened to the staff talk, laugh and carry on like they were in a club.

Myself and two other clients played musical chairs between the basins, the table and the chairs for a good hour whilst we listened to this carry on. The staff seemed more interested in doing the receptionist’s hair than anything!!

Then my stylist told me she had to be done in 20 minutes so she could go pick up a new car – even though she’d had me sat waiting for 2+ hours.

I should’ve walked out but wanted to give them a chance!

Can anyone recommend a good hairdresser that can help me transition from black to blonde?

Thank you!
