Best hot chocolate in Canberra?

We’ve had numerous posts on coffee…..so as it is winter, wondered where the best place to get hot chocolate is?

Had a good one today at Urban Pantry in Manuka – made using real chocolate instead of the powdered form.

I do not have a sweet tooth at all, but found this one to be eminently drinkable.

Good thing is they were really happy to make a smaller version for my three year old.

Normally if you ask for a small version you get a blank look followed by the comment…’sorry we only make it in one size….’

Does Milo even admit to being chocolate any more?

I hated milk as a kid and still do. However, they tried to make me drink Quik and Milo so I could get some of the disgusting stuff down my gullet.

As a result, the very thought of it makes my mouth and throat gum up

Alternatively…

1. Pour preferred milk into mug.
2. Heat in microwave for 90 seconds or so.
3. Add six heaped teaspoons of Milo.
4. Imagine you’re 10yo again and stir frantically as though your parents are about to bust you stealing all the Milo.
5. Enjoy!

Never tried Pangea’s, but Kindle’s is so thick and pudding-y, it’s like drinking a heart-attack – only delicious!

That sounds close enough. Pangea’s was like flowing molten chocolate. I’m surprised it poured.

Kali chocolate powder from Somage Fine Foods, I don’t know of anyone that sells it in Canberra so mail order it is.

In the hope that it’s like what Pangea’s used to make before they closed, I’m going to try that out. I used to take people there and buy it for them just so that they could experience that sort of hot chocolate.

Yes, thankyou! It’s usually all about the coffee, which smells nice and all but it not comparison to a good hot choc!

I am partial to the chilli hot chocolate at Koko Black.

+1. It’s a winner. Not as sickly sweet as the regular hot chocolate.

Quick tips for happiness:

— Aldi pod coffee machine ($79)

— 16 Chocolate pods. ($6)

— Reggio coffee pods ($6)

— Bottle of Habanero tobasco sauce.

— Drop of tobasco (ONE SOLITARY DROP) in bottom of large mug.

— Long pour of Reggio

— Long pour of chocolate

— Hit the clean button and enjoy

Max Brenners is good in Belconnen

Kindle in the City makes the best Italian Hot Chocolate (OMFG!)

Peppermint patty – hot chocolate with a shot of peppermint schnapps. You can have both the alcohol and the marshmallows!

Koko Black is too rich for my liking. Max Brenner isn’t rich enough. (Why is it so hard for chocolatiers to make fantastic hot chocolate?)

Get a Max Brenner and mix with a koko black! Problem solved.

MB has many types of hot chocolate from recollection. Chocolate goes well with anything, dont mind a bit mixed in with a nice coffee!

Koko Black is lovely, but generally I feel like I can see through time while drinking it. (Mixture of melted chocolate, milk, and cream, optional chili.)

Cream does a nice chocolate-in-hot-milk and you can choose the type of chocolate. I like top deck.

Haven’t tried Max Brenner’s hot chocolate because I was so disappointed by the bad service and ghastly coffee I had there. So bad I formally complained, and their service people sent me a voucher – the other half refused to go again and I had trouble finding someone willing to take it as a gift!

Cognac is the best hot chocolate. It is healthier too, as no marshmallows are required, and it comes in the size you want.

Max Brenner, Belconnen.

And usually great marshmellows – the marshmallow can make or break a hot chocolate

Hear, Hear! If someone can point me in the direction of a beverage establishment that makes their own, fresh marshmallows (and doesn’t just open another bag of pascall’s finest) – I should be glad to give them my service! (as long as the HotChoc doesn’t suck)…

Beppes and Knead in the Belco Markets both make delicious HCs.

For a decent and reasonably priced hot chocolate that’s not too overwhelming, the CMAG cafe’s good.

Milk and Honey used to make a good hot chocolate (with real chocolate). But it’s been a while, so it might’ve changed…

Waldorf can make a good powder hot chocolate, but often stuff it up with too much syrup or not enough powder. (And usually great marshmellows – the marshmallow can make or break a hot chocolate)

Another favourite was Gus’ for their peppermint hot chocolate, but every time I’ve been in there in the past six months they’ve had no peppermint.

Koko Black for creamy and smooth.

Tosolini’s for traditional Italian and very thick.

The Urban Pantry method is quite good too.

Yes, you can get coffee in different size containers why not hot chocolate?!

Best one I’ve had was at Lonsdale St Roasters
