Best Kangaroo Steak in Canberra?

By VYBerlinaV8_the_one_they_all_copy 9 November 2008 21

Hi everyone – in order to make good on a promise to an American colleague, I was hoping to get some recommendations as to restuarants serving good kangaroo steak in Canberra.

So… any suggestions? Any favourites? Any to watch out for?

Thanks, fellow rioters!

Go to Rock salt in Hawker. Best roo ever, its the reason I now buy roo all the time and cook for myself.

Yeah, but they’re effectively charge you $25 to cook your own food – at the table.

Agree Holden, Monaro Hwy unfortunately provides excellent fodder 🙁

I give up getting my car fixed – last time I picked it up from the panelbeaters within 3 weeks I’d hit another one!

Alright, open fire on my lack of driving ability 😛

I know the Green Herring used to do that kind of thing (and a great lambs brain entre). Haven’t been there in ages so can’t vouch for current quality (though it used to be great). The good thing about the Green Herring is that rustic feel – real ‘strayan like.

(I’m assuming this place hasn’t closed down either)

The roadkill on the GDE has been good source of roo for the last couple of weeks.

Kamberra winery restaurant used to do nice kangaroo. They also recommend an Australian wine by the glass with their meals. I’m not even sure if they are still open though.

Americans are also impressed by Balmain Bugs if you can find somewhere that has those.

Just get some steaks at the butcher and cook’em for your friend.

Oddly enough, at both places we have “owned” in Canberra–one in Gungahlin, one in the inner north–we have had a kangaroo hop down the path outside our front door.

Spose I should have nabbed them and chucked ’em on the bbq!

Monaro Hwy is pretty good, although, sadly, I have personal experience on Coppins Crossing Road.

Don’t forget Majura Rd, always plenty there too.

try debarcle in braddon – their kangaroo fillet brings back memories of furphies in moore street. I wonder where the chef there went? he was a mean kangaroo fillet mignon creator…

Ironbark definitely. I think I also had good roo at the Green Herring too.

mmm – fresh off the grill, garnished with glycol and plastic chrome…

Not quite Canberra, but if you want upmarket, not wanky, and decidedly ‘Stralian — Grazing at Gundaroo do a great roo.

(PS: despite being in the building which was previously the pub, this is not pub food. 3 times as good, and 3 times the price. You can get beer though.)

I agree with Holden, but you gotta get them while they’re fresh – so drive down when it’s low light.

Monaro Hwy is pretty good, although, sadly, I have personal experience on Coppins Crossing Road.

For a more gourmet kangaroo offering, though, Anise usually has ‘roo on their menu. And, in my experience, they do it very, very well.

I’ll certainly give my seal of approval to Ironbark aswell. Only been there once but intersting menu, friendly service, fresh produce, great prices, generous portions, good coffee & cakes. Yummo.

I’ll second that Ironbark nomination…they do a fabulous kangaroo salami and emu prosciutto too!
