Looking for a makeup artist? Perhaps you’re an actor, presenter or model. Maybe you’re getting married or heading to a special event that deserves something special. You might be getting a commercial, corporate or editorial photo taken and want to look your absolute best.

Hiring a professional makeup artist with that special touch can leave you looking and feeling glamorous, pampered, and confident. If you’ve ever looked for a makeup artist, however, you’ll know the importance of finding the right one with the talent needed to give you the look you want.

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing a makeup artist, and share where to find the best in Canberra.

What makes a great makeup artist?

Choosing the right makeup artist can help take the worry away. It will give you confidence your makeup – no matter what style – will look amazing.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing a makeup artist.

  • Talented. At the end of your makeup session, you should feel like a million dollars. A talented makeup artist with years of experience will make that happen.
  • Creative. Every face is different and so requires a unique approach to makeup. The best artists are creative and achieve a look that flatters your features and meets your brief.
  • Equipment and products. When you work with a makeup artist, you should expect them to use professional equipment and quality products. They should use the best brands and tools in the industry to achieve flawless results.
  • Clean. The last thing you want to see when at the hands of a makeup artist are dirty brushes, damaged pallets, and nasty-looking lipsticks. Everything should be clean and well-maintained.
  • Well priced. At the end of the day, you should get what you pay for. You don’t want to feel ripped off, so compare prices across a few makeup artists. This way, you’ll be comfortable that you’re paying a fair price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a makeup artist?

A makeup artist is a beauty practitioner who specialises in applying makeup primarily to faces. They create custom looks and work with actors, presenters, models and individuals wanting a special look for a special occasion. They can work on bridal, fashion, editorial, commercial and corporate projects.

What should I look for in a makeup artist?

Look at examples of their work so you can see how artistic and diverse the makeup artist is. Check for creative flair. Most makeup artists have photos of their work on their websites or social media. Seek one who is experienced and detailed. You’ll benefit most if your makeup artist is a good communicator and flexible.

What questions should I ask a makeup artist?

Make a list of questions to ask a makeup artist before engaging them, to make sure they meet your needs. Your questions could cover the brand of makeup they use, their training and experience, and style. You’ll want to see examples of their work. You’ll also want to ask about their fees.

Do makeup artists provide trials?

Ask your makeup artist if they do trials and if this is free or costs. With weddings, for example, many makeup artists trial in advance so the end result is perfect on the big day.

How much does it cost to have makeup done?

Many factors influence the amount you’ll pay. Some makeup artists charge an hourly rate and some offer packages. Factors influencing cost include the style of makeup you want and whether travel is involved. Another factor is whether the makeup artist has undergone formal training. The length of time in the industry is yet another factor.

I have used Zoe Barton in the past, Not sure if she is still in canberra, but would surely recommend her.

I can second Viktoria Novak Designs – her attention to detail is stunning, she really listens to what you want (in my case, not too much makeup and a natural look), and best of all? She comes to you! I didn’t have to traipse all around town on the morning of my Wedding – I could stay at home and relax.

Laura check out Viktoria Novak Design, her bridal make up is simply stunning! http://www.viktorianovakdesign.com

Good luck!

Mrs Monarch has advised me that she got her make-up done with Napoleon in the Canberra Centre, for our wedding last year. We were both very pleased with the results, and the cost was reasonable. In addition, I believe the package included $100 worth of make-up from in store, which could be used for the wedding make-up, or for stuff to take for daily use. Worth a look if you are happy to venture to the CC on your big day. Fairly sure the usual pre-wedding make-up trial was included as standard too.
