Best nightlife in Canberra?

Northbourne strip

A few years ago there was a post on RiotACT about the best pubs in canberra.

I would like to know if this situation has changed?

Where are the real dives, the great music venues, the best pickup joints, the roughest places. The places to go if you just want to sit and drink.

So does anyone have a place they thinks fits the above categories?.

For girls with bleached hair, spray tans and wearing lots of lycra, chasing business men Tongue and Groove is a good bet.

If by “businessman” you mean spiky haired, pointy shoe and pastel coloured shirt with white collar and cuffs wearing, pretentious self declared “up and comers” usually just finished their APS grad program, then yes.

My only visit to T&G as a businessman (read mid thirties private sector suit wearing mid level executive with another couple of chaps similarly attired) had me down one drink, mutter about the yoof of today and wander out to find somewhere more appealing to a boring old fart like me.

gold. absolute gold 🙂

Hmmm Hippo or King O’Malleys?

It may be the cheesiest place in Civic but Galaxy is one of the few places that people in their mid 30’s and over can go and not stand out as being a lot older than the general clientele.

is filthy’s still open?

The beer garden our the front of the Durham and Filthy’s in Kingston is a great place to hang out. Transit in the city isn’t bad, as far as Civic goes. Also Suburban in Dickson is a cool place to hang out, and, if you don’t mind waiting ages for a drink, Trinity can be good too. It’s always the company and not the place that make a great night out.

I don’t enjoy the Phoenix at all. It always smells/is damp and there are always drunks sitting at the bar.

Love Tongue and Groove for after work drinks on a Friday and Kennedy Room for the cocktails.

More so Lot33, as they have the sort of music I really enjoy, like trance.

Lot33 is no more! They closed down a few weeks ago, with a big liquidated sign on the front door.
Also, in Kingston, B-Bar has now transformed into Crust Pizza.

Ah no! I loved B-Bar as well. Now my husband and I will have to road trip to Sydney or Melbourne for decent nights out 🙁

What is the issue with the Wig and Pen? I’m a great fan of their beer, especially their take on the APA, I’ve not tasted better. and it is nice to have a venue where people can talk rather than shout.

No we love All Bar with some reservations.

Can’t talk further about the Wig for fear of their drunken legion of lawyers and I’d rather not be taken to the Human Rights Commission again.

The Wig, with great sadness, is not a place I would recommend to any fan of RiotACT.

orly? i thought RA dislikes “All Bar Nun”? Any link to previous discussion about W&P?

People have been bagging Moose for 20+ years but they all still go.

The Wig, with great sadness, is not a place I would recommend to any fan of RiotACT.

Wig & Pen seems to be popular for myself + friends, a place where you can talk and hear each other without yelling.

I used to always enjoy Academy and Lot33 (in Kingston), haven’t been for awhile though. More so Lot33, as they have the sort of music I really enjoy, like trance.

I have a love/hate relationship with Mooseheads, which is one of the biggest dives also. I bag it and the patrons out, but used to always end up in there anyway, and usually had a great time. But they let in too many people upstairs and it gets extremely over-crowded. They also couldn’t make a cocktail to save themselves.

I like O’Malleys in the city. Great for a pint. Half decent food too, just don’t expect fantastic quality. It is what it is, and its good for what it is.

Uni Pub used to be great, but the DJ’s there have the ‘I’m a DJ and therefore I am awesome’ syndrome. I used to enjoy the music there, now they just play top 40 crud.

Shooters gets the prize for the biggest dive in Canberra.

I went to Tongue & Groove one night after stumbling out of Academy and very much enjoyed it. I think…..

And thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

I think you’ve over egged the pudding there, they’ll have to share the honours if we’re going to award for every category.

If you want to hang with the hip kids, phoenix, front, and on friday nights Smiths Alternative Bookstore.

The suburban bars of the inner north are good to go to with friends: All Bar, suburban, debacle, edgars, and new player Wilburs in Hackett.

O’Malleys is a great place to meet people in Civic.

For the music and the dancing and the grinding with the girls, look for the longest line around the Sydney Building, or possibly Academy.

For girls with bleached hair, spray tans and wearing lots of lycra, chasing business men Tongue and Groove is a good bet.

For sitting and drinking, I like Kremlin Bar.
