Best of Canberra - Buffets

Buffet

Who remembers going to Pizza Hut in the ’90s and being told you had to eat something substantial before going crazy at the dessert bar, filling your bowl up with ice cream, chocolate cake, red and green jelly, marshmallows, chopped nuts and sprinkles? OK, it may have just been the children of the ’90s who did this. But it was the best.

In my books, a good buffet/all-you-can-eat has a wide variety of cuisines that both kids and adults will be content with. Both hot and cold food is a must, as well as a good salad bar and the all important dessert bar.

It seems that buffets are few and far between these days. I think Australia wide there are only a handful of Pizza Hut buffets left, and I know there are a few Sizzler restaurants around the place (though I’ve never been!). But where in Canberra can you find a good buffet? I’m on the hunt for the best all-you-can-eat in the ACT and I’ll announce the result in next Monday’s taste off.

Ergh – buffet’s are the worst. This style of eating encourages over eating and generates too much waste… avoid at all costs.

I watched a documentary that shows how much food is wasted from buffets in Las Vegas. One business takes delivery of a portion of the waste, sorts it and feeds the ‘muck’ to pigs – yes the pigs would eat bacon.

I don’t think Canberra buffets can really be compared to Las Vegas… we don’t have anywhere near as many, for a start, nor as many tourists who don’t know what else to do for dinner.

In other news, does the Hyatt breakfast buffet count?

Have you been to Star Buffet?

Does one buffet equal a Las Vegas comparison? My mistake.

It certainly is not one buffet, go to any club, hotel, or restaurant like Ruby’s in Dickson, or the hundreds of similar buffets around Canberra. Most distasteful is the vultures circling the food as if it is their last meal. Piling up plates like it is all going to be taken away from them unless they get in first.

I had a wonderful meal at a Persian restaurant in Gungahlin called The Saffron Room. The food was excellent and different, so I praised it to all my friends, organising a dinner there on a Sunday.

It turned out to be Sunday buffet night and it was awful.

Lesson learned, but must confess I have never had to ask a restaurant “Is it still a La Carte?”

I mentioned Vegas because I had only just watched this documentary in the last week – but hey, why not compare it to Vegas? It is scaleable. The buffet concept will generate considerably waste than any other restaurant.

The best buffets are those where they weight the food, so small eaters don’t subsidise those who stuff themselves. Those who rave about buffets are often in the last category, because they think it’s good value. I’m sure it is, if someone else is subsidising the overeating.

Am I alone in having alarm bells ring when I see “All you can eat”?

Exactly how many times do you think those left overs have come out of the kitchen fridge?

The Eastern Tiger at Phillip, ironically on the former site of the gym where I started training in the late 1970s.

Hyatt also has a seafood buffet which is very well attended.

I simply don’t understand buffets, it’s never been my thing. I have attended the Hyatt one though. Just ate three dozen oysters and some scampi and left happy. Not enough to make me go back though.

This one just came in via @herberthodgson on Twitter: the star buffet at the Burns Club has to be on that list. For under $30 you can eat yourself silly! Decent quality food too..

Are you drunk? Star buffet.

The High Tea buffet at the Hyatt Hotel is amazing.
