Best of Canberra - Chai

Coffee

After last week’s wind and rain, it is starting to look like the cold weather is here to stay. I found myself digging out my woollen jumpers and drinking twice as much tea in an effort to warm up.

Chai is my absolute favourite. When the skies are grey and the weather is cooler, I regularly crave a warm, spicy chai tea. On cold Canberra nights, I will often brew a pot of chai on the stove before bed. There is just something about the sweet and spicy milky brew that warms me up from head to toe.

As we approach another Canberra winter, I want to find the best chai in town. Most days I prefer a milk-infused pot of chai made with loose leaf tea (never a tea bag), but there are some days that just call for the sweeter powdered chai latte. Whatever your preference, where do you get yours?

To vote, let me know your favourite in the comments below. I’ll try the two most popular places and let you know my verdict in next Monday’s Taste Off article.

Chai doesn’t require any special machine, technique, blend or narrative of self discovery a la Real Chai (which is the most insipid thing I’ve ever tasted).
In India they’ll be using the equivalent of bushels.
Mums recipe, 1 tea bag, half a mug water add a cardamon pod and a couple of cloves , bring it to boil, add full cream milk (use less water if you using light), bring to boil again, when it rises, put it on a low heat and then when it rises again your done. bonus points if you want to use cinnamon, ginger. Add sugar and your done. save yourself $4.5 and impress your friends with your culinary wizadry.

Exactly ! Can’t believe this barista stuff…hundreds of million of Indian women have been making it daily for nearly 200 years and it’s so cheap and easy. Strong black cheap tea just this side of bitter, spices, a glug of condensed milk and a stirring pot over a fire. They’d probably call that “artisan” these days if anybody wants to set up a stall and charge 5 bucks a cup 😉

The best Chai Tea would have to be from Adore Tea.

As soon as you add milk it becomes a Chai Latte.

Best chai in a cafe = Cupping Room or Mocan and Green Grout

Autolyse has a delicious chai 🙂 and 80/20 have a nice 9 spice chai late too

+1 for the Real Chai stand at the EPIC Farmers’ Markets.

I don’t buy many hot drinks from cafes as I usually make my own at home, but I have enjoyed the (powdered) chai latte from the Belconnen Labor Club in the past.

I drink a lot of chai, as coffee has decided it doesn’t agree with me 🙁 Most places serve something abominable and way too sweet. However, the cafe at the Canberra Museum and Gallery serves a wonderful brew, again using Real Chai, but it’s made by a barista who knows what he is doing. Makes all the difference. Beess and Co at Yarralumla do a lovely cafetiere of chai with honey on the side (not a latte, but still…) If you do favour the powdered kind, then I suggest a cafe which uses Bondi Chai. It’s not quite as sweet as some, and it’s much lower in fat than most. Some cafes which use it are Sakeena’s at Coolemon Court and Yala (?) cafe at CIT Reid. The latter brews it rather well and was the first place I tried Bondi Chai.

But the CMAG one is the real standout for a good chai latte.

I think that’s the Real Chai stall – that’s the only chai stall I can think of out there. They have my vote too.

Tea Centre in the Canberra Centre has several chai blends, Mumbai is my favourite blend. For a quick and easy fix Alchemy chai elixir (in some supermarkets) in microwaved milk does well enough.

For pretty much anything tea-related, it’s hard to go past Adore Tea out at Gold Creek – their various chai options are no exception.

A good chai latte is difficult to find! They’re often way too sweet and not hot enough, but I think any place in Canberra that serves the Real Chai brand instead of the flavourless powdered rubbish is on the right track.

I’ve had great chai lattes at Bittersweet in Kingston, but the best I’ve had is at the Real Chai stall at the Capital Region Farmers Market. It’s served in a takeaway paper cup – nothing fancy, but it’s good.
