Best of Canberra: Chicken Parma

I will never forget the day my English husband sampled his first chicken parma. After a long day of beer drinking with friends in Melbourne (whilst on a holiday out from England) someone suggested we ‘go for a parma’. Intrigued and slightly scared, hubbie found himself faced with a schnitzel the size of a dinner plate smothered in tomato goodness and melted cheese. I think this was perhaps one of the reasons he moved to Australia – the parma (well, that and the Kingo).

To date, I’ve not really found an outstanding parma in Canberra although admittedly haven’t been trying THAT hard, so tell me what you’ve got. Where is the best place for a chicken parma in Canberra. Preferably one that can be washed down with a cold beer.

Would love try one today seeing the popularity of it :p

I took my hubby to the Civic Pub and must say their Parma was brilliant! You can see their menu at http://www.civicpub.com.au

Another vote for Edgar’s.

I went there last night on the strength of the recommendations here. The Parma was great as was the atmosphere at the pub. We will definitely go back if we are on that side of town.

The only complaint was that the actual piece of chicken could have been a bit bigger for $21. I could easily two of their Parmas.

i believe they have a parma night with a schnitty and beer for a set price (haven’t been for a while, so can’t recall details) – similalry with burgers on another night. you could order two then…

Disclosure: I’ve never had the parma there, but it is a great little pub, so I was keen to learn if the parma is worthwhile. Thank you!

Another vote for Edgar’s.

Where did OP find the Parma pictured at the top? It looks way better than anything I have been served lately.

I will gladly go and review that Parma.

I would question why anyone would want to eat that. Schnitzel should be eaten only with a bit of tomato ketchup. Too many times in’s smothered in all sorts – probably because it’s overcooked and may taste otherwise like cardboard.

I would question why anyone would put tomato ketchup on a chicken schnitzel. No no and …. no.

I am also going to give you the benefit of the doubt in that you used the term ‘ketchup’ instead of ‘sauce’ to differentiate from the tomato based sauce placed on a parma. Australians do not use ketchup. Ever.

You are right – I did do it to make the differentiation. But let’s not get into the origins of the word ‘ketchup’ and who originally called it what. You might find it was the English who took it westwards.

And the Americans added the sugar to it whilst toning down the spice of the East

Belconnen Labor Club gets my vote. 2 schnitzels with cheese, tomato and bacon, and some super chips and nice salad.

We used to go to Belconnen for years until the restaurant changed hands at the start of this year and went downhill. We go to Charnwood now and the restaurant staff have mentioned that a lot of other customers tell them the same thing. They do an excellent Parma at the Charnwood Labor club.

Zeffs used to do by far the best Parma in Canberra but sadly it is gone now

I’ll take back my vote for the Charnwood Labor club. Just had a terrible Parma there for dinner. Overcooked chicken and a smidgen of sauce makes a rubbish Parma.

So far Olims is the only one with two votes! Calling for more input on this one. I need to end up with a final 2!

I never voted for the Parma at the Mecure. I have only had steak there. The other person had Chicken Schnitzel also. Schnitzel and Parma are too completely different beasts.

Olims at Ainslie do a great schnitzel, and on Thursday (I think that is the day) they have a two for one schnitzel deal, which makes for a cheap meal.

Olims was bought out a few years back by the Mecure hotel group. It is now called Mecure Canberra. The bar, bistro and beer garden is called the Olims bar though. Just in case anyone was trying to find the place.

It is an excellent place to go on a Sunday to watch the UFC and eat a good counter meal.

Oh I forgot the Austrian Club in Mawson! Huge portions, awesome schnittys. Order the mixed schnitzel, you won’t be disappointed.

that said, ainslie shops’ edgar’s has schnitty nights and their fare is pretty good, pretty well priced and served amid a beer-selling environment with some good drops on tap.

Tradies woden have the best around, they offer two sizes regular and legendary and heaps of odd and fun topping options my fav is the mexican; salsa, sour cream, guacamole, jalapeños & mozzarella cheese, killer!

I like the ones they do at the Gungahlin Lakes Club. They also provide a range of toppings for your schnitty.

Lanyon Vikings Club does a pretty good one, a few varieties to choose from as well.

Dickson Tradies is also pretty well known for their schnittys.

The Durham in Kingston.
