A friend of mine was complaining about the lack of family friendly restaurants and cafes in Canberra. I was really interested because not having kids myself, it has not been something that I’ve had to think about when eating out.

So this week I’m asking for nominations on Canberra’s best family friendly restaurant/café. Feel free to also tell me what you think makes a venue family friendly.

And wish me luck! I’m going to borrow some children for the day, check out the best two and report back.

the nursery at the far end of the strip in pialligo has a great play area for the kids and a decent cafe. is it ‘rodney’s’?

i take my boys to pho quoc in dickson; they’re very obliging with them and mine like the food, even at just 5 and 2 yrs…

the new grain and bean place in dickson is also good, with lots of space for kids to burn off energy not far away…

Papparich in Civic have a kids zone

Bitter & Sweet in Green square is good too, although I am always aware of a short time span as most patrons seem child free.

I went to Bittersweet last weekend with mates who have 4/6yo children. The staff were good with them and there’s good kid options on the menu too.

Samara reviewed a cafe a while ago at Cook shops which I have been meaning to try for the kids – http://the-riotact.com/weekend-cafe-hot-spot-little-oink-cook-shops/131701

Mine range from 1-5 so it’s as much about what is around to entertain/distract them as the menu and in honesty we generally do coffee out rather than meals. So, best coffee shops in that regard (for me) are:

Rodney’s Nursery Cafe (there is a playground outside) and the cafe at the Botanic Gardens

Bitter & Sweet in Green square is good too, although I am always aware of a short time span as most patrons seem child free.

What is posted as a recommendation, is also a warning to many others to stay away. ☺

Excellent Café called Tommy & Me near Kings Swim in Macgregor. They have a fabulous play area and even put on craft for the little ones. Staff are great and the food is Yum. Recommend the Caesar salad for sure.

Tommy & Me in Macgregor without a doubt!

for the following reasons:

Play area for the kids where you can see them and you can eat and peace and they can play
the kids are free to ‘be kids’
Kids meals that arent deep fried junk
Colouring in for the kids
Easy parking- so no dragging kids through shopping centres
Free Wifi
The staff are great, very kid friendly and are parents and are very patient
and the best bit is that they have edible craft events at least twice a week where as staff membr sits down and entertains the little ones while you sit back and relax for a while!
Great article on them here

One more someone has mentioned to me before – Wilbur’s at Hackett.

I think Canberra needs more restaurant-friendly families.

I think there are a lot around.. much to my displeasure. I much prefer my eating experiences to be child free 😛

My suggestions would be:
Central Cafe in Gungahlin
Early Doors Cafe in Gungahlin – they have a kids corner set up.. they might be a bit pricey to bring the kids though (that being said I have no idea how much people are willing to spend when out with kids)
Max Brenner – does this count as cafe?
The Dickson all you can eat place – I haven’t been in a while, but I remember when I was a kid I liked going there.. free refills on soft drink!
George Harcourt Inn – outside, last time I was there, there were plenty of kids running around.

I was at Jamie’s the other night with a 3 year old. She’s generally very well behaved anyway, but the Jamie’s staff were great. They also gave her some pencils and paper with activities and one of those things that look like binoculars but you click through pictures on them. Good kids menu too for $9.50 – super cheap.

Pretty much anywhere at Gold Creek or in Gungahlin. Café Injoy rates a special mention as does Kingston & Co at Westfield in Belco.

I don’t have kids either, but from what I’ve seen with my own eyes and heard from friends who’ve dined there Jamie’s Italian seems to be very good and willing to deal with kids.
