Did you know that on average, each Australian consumes 12 meat pies a year?

That means we’ve got to know a thing or two about our meat pies right?!

Whenever I eat a meat pie, I always wonder if I’m doing it right. Like is there a correct way of eating a pie! I turned to my good friend Google who advised me that there are many ways of consuming a pie. You can pull the pastry lid off and spoon out the meaty center … or there’s the way I do it, where I squeeze tomato sauce all over the top and use my fingers to make sure I have covered every inch in sauce, I pick it up and bite into it. After all, what fun is life without mess?!

So this week I want to know where are Canberra’s best meat pies?

Not a rumour…Chifley and Spence grocers stock Hayden’s Pies which, I gotta agree, are pretty good.

This makes me very happy. I was only told about a week ago I could get them here…! I hadn’t been able to confirm for myself yet. 🙂

I used to have a job that had me visit almost every shopping centre or local shopping complex in Canberra, now we have some pretty good pies out there. My top rated ones would be Griffith Butcher, Red Hill Butcher and Oriental Bakery in Hawker.

+1 for Hayden’s at Friendly Grocer in Spence & Chifley. For me, they are a reminder of how a good meat pie used to be….

Hayden’s Pies at Chifley Shops are awesome … haven’t had a plain one from there yet, but their lamb korma pie is to die for!

Elaines gourmet pies Dickson , Bacon and Cheese is always a winner.

Rumour has it that Hayden’s Pies are stocked at both the Spence Supermarket and Chifley Shops.

By far the best pies I have ever eaten ! Well worth a detour up to Ulladulla if you’re on the South Coast.

Don’t expect too many plain pies either – Butter Chicken, Peking Duck, Steak Dianne, Chicken & Leek, Roast dinners, etc etc.

My favourite is the Mexican pie from Dobinson’s in the city. The hit of sour cream in the middle sets it apart from others.

Pretty much any pie from Flute bakery.

And at the lower end, the pies from Elaine’s in Fyshwick are usually pretty good too.

Oh I do love a good meat pie. I rate the ones at Dream Cuisine very highly (I’m eating one right now!)

Gum Tree Pies at EPIC farmer’s market on Saturday mornings.

I like the chicken and vegtable pie from Griffith Butcher. They have heaps of other kinds too.

I’m a bit of a weirdo though. I like to eat it with a knife and fork and a side salad! 🙂

Chisholm Bakery hands down. Best pies in Canberra. Many people scoff at this, but I have converted quite a few people.
