Best of Canberra - Milkshake

Whenever I think about milkshakes, my first reaction is to burst out singing “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard”, Kelis’ 2003 hit, “Milkshake”.

The famous shake has been around since 1885. In my Grandparents era (the 50’s), children would save their pocket money to buy a delicious, creamy, syrupy, ice-cold milkshake from their local Milk Bar. Indulging in a milkshake at the Milk Bar was the cool thing to do.

In fact, milkshakes are still a “thing”, and are becoming more and more popular. Cafés are reinventing the traditional flavours of Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry, bringing in their own crazy flavours, making them just as popular amongst adults as they are with the kiddies …. I know I’m partial to a milkshake.

For many, the milkshake is a reminder of summer, youth and indulgence. So with summer on its way, I want to know where can Canberra’s best milkshake be found?

You send me on a pleasant trip down memory lane when you mention a malted milkshake.

Every time I try to find one they’re just milk, not enough flavour, and barely any ice cream. Seems the best I can find in Canberra is McDonalds.

That would be anything but milk from that chain.

I had a milkshake at the Central Cafe in Queanbeyan last week, and it was very, very good. Big metal cup, plenty of ice-cream, premium quality flavouring.

Would order again.

Yeah – probably the best thing Central Cafe in Qbn do these days ! Its amost a meal in itself though – so thick.

Thick/Milk shakes need to be in one of those cold, tall metal cups with condensation on the outside – not a small glass cup.

While not exactly a milkshake, the bodalla flavoured milks you can get at chapman shops are delicious. Was always a stop when we stayed at tuross, and is so awesome to now have them locally.

Skim milk, a little bit of ice cream and don’t over do the flavour, is my favourite kind. Thick shakes are too filling and not thirst quenching enough. They are a meal, not a drink.

The milkshakes at Watson take away are almost always perfect!

The only other one that really stands out to me would be the cookie shake from Max Brenner, not really specific to Canberra though.

I prefer to go for thickshakes over milkshakes if they’re being offered so my suggestions are based on that..

This Cafe, Gungahlin. Decent price, full of icecream and just the right amount of flavour
Praga, Dickson. As above, a bit more pricey but still delicious. Straw barely moves in the shake, nice and cold!
Sfoglia, Dickson. A new one to my list, their milkshakes are also very nice, they’ve recently changed their milkshake/thickshake menu (didn’t used to provide thickshakes). Had an excellent nutella thickshake here last week.. it was amazing!

Milkshake winner for me the peanut butter one at Max Brenner

It used to be the choc-banana “smoothie” at Pellegrinos, but I’m not sure if it has survived the change in management.

Simply, copious amounts of ice cream, lashings of chocolate topping, then a bit (or a lot) more choc topping to be sure, a whole banana and just enough milk to make it liquid. Perfect!

Milkshakes really are one thing best made at home, I think. The Pellegrinos offering was the closest I’ve ever come to matching my own preferences.

Otherwise, seriously, either a McDonald’s shake or an Oak flavoured milk are as good or better than most commercial offerings that barely put enough flavouring in to change the colour of the milk; worse, some don’t even use ice cream!
